PC Reboots when playing videos. (No Blue Screen)

I built this pc around August. Specs in my sig.

It reboots randomly when I am watching a video. Type of video does not seam to matter. I have tried MPC, VLC, & WMP. It doesn't happen all the time. When it does happen,...it happens somewhere in the middle of the video. (Not when I first open it, or when it ends.)

It also reboots every single time I try to burn a DVD, using Nero 8(NeroVision to make avi files be able to Burn to DVD). I make it to the progress bar section, and it crashes/reboots.

It does not give me a Blue Screen. Just crashes. I have unchecked "Automatically Restart" under Startup & Recovery. Still nothing.

I checked event logs, and nothing shows up for the reboots.

Windows XP Home us fully updated. Graphics Drivers are also updated.

This didn't always happen. Everything was fine for a while. Started rebooting from videos about a month ago, randomly. Seams to have gotten worse since then. I just found out about the DVD Burning problem today. Not just Nero. I also tried authoring with other free programs to same effect.

Please help :(

Also, my temps are all fine. CoreTemp measures peaks at around 50c during the Burn. Under 40c Idle. I'm OC'd to 3500mh, 9X multi, 1:1 stable since I first built it. I have a Cooler Master Stacker 832 Case, Tuniq Tower, and 6 more 120mm Case Fans.

I can't borrow a DVD Rom right now. I'm supposed to have these movies Burned to a DVD before I leave for the weekend. They are movies for my girlfriend's nephews.

Besides, that wouldn't explain the reboots when watching movies. Which oddly only happens randomly. The Burning problem happens every time. This would be the first time I'm using this DVD Burner. But again, this wouldn't explain the other problem.

I just loaded optimized defaults in my Bios, and it still reboots when I try burning. :(

I have this system to do a complete memory dump. Is there a way to find out the problem by accessing the dump file somehow?

I appreciate your help.

I just installed Nero today. I've been having the other problem for almost a month now though. So it can't be Nero. Unless they are two separate issues.

I have checked the video files that have caused a crash with G-Spot. It always tells me that I have all required codecs. And don't forget, I have watched every single video on my hard drive, in it's entirety. It's just sometimes it will reboot. More so recently. I made sure that it's not one particular type of video file. Seams to be random.

I have updated to the latest Nvidia drivers, and that didn't help either.

Thanks man.

I can't think of anything significant that I've done recently. The video problem crept up on me. It happened once or twice, and I thought nothing of it. Before I knew it, it was happening a lot. The burning problem, I just found out about when I installed Nero.

They have to be related. Where is the link? Something that happens while watching a video, and encoding an avi for dvd burn.

I shut down, and checked all wiring in the case. Made sure everything was secured. I even reseated the RAM, and Video Card. I thought this worked because I got much farther in NeroVision than I had before. Almost half-way done. But it still crashed and reboot.

I appreciate you guys trying to help.

I just ran Trend Micro Housecall 6.5 via the supplied link. I did a complete scan of all drives. It only found 3 vulnerabilities. They are from Microsoft Office. It is frozen (Idle) on step three (Listing and removing detected infections and vulnerabilities) for the past 30 minutes though. I'm going to just close it.

I'm running sfc /scannow right now.

ah! thank you for letting me know. I'd check to see if you have all the SP for Office, and if so I am thinking you go infected via office at some point.

I don't understand how it would be the power supply. It only reboots during those two actions mentioned above. Nothing else does this. Including more taxing actions, like Adobe Premiere Pro, Cubase SX3, etc. I have a Corsair HX620.

I just checked Abit site, and all drivers for my motherboard are current. The Intel Chipset driver for P35 is also up to date.

The one driver I could never install, is the Intel AA. It shows up as Intel Matrix Storage Manager Raid Edition. It would never let me install this. I get this message:

"This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing this software. Setup will exit"

I never thought much of this because I don't use raid.

There have been two Bios Revs for my motherboard (Abit IP35 Pro). But none of the listed changes are of any concern to me. Here are the listed fixed for both revs:

Rev 12
1. Update CPU micro code.
2. Support Wolfdale & Yolkfield CPU.
3. Support the pin definition of Front Audio adjusting function.
4. BIOS compiled date: 08/15/2007.

Rev 14

1. Fixed the POST will show CPU has been changed message when first time SAVE & EXIT BIOS menu.
2. Enhanced the S3 compatibility with abitEQ utility.
3. BIOS compiled date: 09/06/2007.

Thanks

you need to check on any service packs for office and once they are installed, rerun housecall again.

Office is now fully updated. I ran housecall again, and it found nothing this time.

What about checking the dump file? I don't know what else to do.

any errors listed in System Event Viewer?

Yes. It just rebooted on me again, while using NeroVision. The progress bar made it about half way through the encoding process. This time,...I had nTune open, CoreTemp open, and Task Manager open to monitor what happens right before the crash.

-CPU Usage was bouncing around from 60-75%
-Memory Usage was low
-CPU Temp (CoreTemp) was hovering around 45c or so.
-nTune showed a fairly constant temp of around 50C for the graphics.

I just checked Event Viewer, and I get no Red X's. Just Exclamation marks.
The only one that looks weird to me, is this one;

Source: Redbook
"This drive has not been shown to support digital audio playback."

Update: I just noticed that there are four instances of this error with Red X's. Although the time shows that it happened a few minutes before the crash;

DCOM got error "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. " attempting to start the service NMIndexingService with arguments "" in order to run the server:
{E8933C4B-2C90-4A04-A677-E958D9509F1A}

Thanks again.

looks like the optical drive is the issue, and it triggers a cascade failure and the system reboots. I'd turn off rebooting on errors and see what the error is exactly, but I have a feeling its the drive itself.

How do I do that? I already unchecked "Automatically Restart" under Startup & Recovery. Actually, it's been unchecked since I built the pc. I don't know of any other way to do it.

okay, if it's still rebooting it's definitely a hardware issue. I'd say the drives shot, and replace it. and use a new cable for the new drive.

if u have played with ur vid card drivers since u built it you could have stacked ur video drivers and they could be conflicting with parts of an old vers ,diffrent build... ext. uninstall display adapter drivers and dont use any betas.... i might be way off but thats my 2 cents. good luck though :)
