PC Problems

Last night we had thunderstorms roll through the area. I turned off my system, but left it plugged into my APC UPS system.
This morning I get up to turn the pc on & when I pushed the power button, nothing.
I opened the side of the case & the motherboard's green led it on. The monitor, which was also hooked up to the UPS side powered up. Also note that the UPS is hooked into a secondary surge protector. No issues with anything else plugged in.
The pc had been working fine up until turning it off last night...as a matter of fact, it's been on pretty much 24/7 unless i'm going out of town, etc.
Suggestions?

It's a custom built machine. Asus K8V-SE Deluxe, AMD XP3200+, 1 gig (512x2) Mushkin ram, 120 gig Seagate (main...partitioned for XP & Ubuntu), 160 gig Seagate (storage), Plextor CD-RW, Plextor DVD-RW, ATI 9700 Pro w/Artic cooling, Cool Cases LX-6A19 (Mods 3A w/fan controller) case w/Antec 400W PS.

Well the first thing I would try is bypassing the UPS and plugging the PC directly in to the wall. If that doesn't work, try leaving it unplugged for a while, then try again. This one is going to sound strange, but it's worked for me several times..if after that it still isn't booting up, unplug the keyboard for an hour or so, plug it back in, then try again.

Ok, I tried what you said along w/removing the 2 sticks of memory, reseating them & removing the video card & reseating it.
Still nothing.
If the power supply was bad, would the green led on the motherboard still light up?
Any & all help will be appreciated!

It's possible that the light could still come on on the motherboard if the power supply was bad, there are several differant voltages supplied by the PSU, so the standby light could be getting power, but other things may not be.

So I guess the simplest solution right now would be to find a ps that I can borrow & swap out.
Since i'm no electronics wiz, I don't think there's any need for me to get the multitester out...I wouldn't know what probe to stick where!

Found out it was the power supply. I went & purchased a Fortron Blue Storm...400W. I hope it's a 400W, anyhow. I heard their 500W was actually a 460W.
I hope it's enough for what i'm running (see above).
Also, I hope it'll be ok when I decide to go from AGP to PCI-e...will it?

I'm pretty sure it is your Power supply. The green light could definitely still be on. Borrow a power supply or buy one and try it out.

Maybe someone can confirm, but I believe plugging your UPS into a surge protector is not reccommended.

Yes, it will. SLi, might be pushing it, but yeh, PCI-e will be absolutely fine. To finally answer your question.

Surge protectors do NOT protect agaisnt lighting strikes.
