PC Problem

Ok, since everyone here is pretty darn helpful - gotta see if I can get some help with my current PC problem that I've been trying to solve/fix. PC problem is current one in the sig.

Woke up and went to check the PC in the morning. Screen was BLACK - monitor light was green, but is usually blue.
tried to hold the power button in, but nothing. Hit the reset button but nothing.
Turned the PC off via the PSU switch. wait a bit and flipped the switch, then his the power button...PC fired up, but nothing visable on the screen...no bios info, winXP (pro) splash screen, etc.
Reseated battery, still same above results. tried a different (known good) battery, and same above results.
took leads off the mobo from the pwr and reset and put back on. Strange that it will power up with the power button, but not off or reset will not shut system off.
reseated vid card, and memory (even tried other - known good), still same above results.
No beep codes, but noticed with the side case off that on the mobo the error code area read 8.7. whatever that means...if anything...could read be a normal read.
Ordered a new PSU, hooked it up, and still got the same above results :(

I'm really at a loss here now. Trying to get this back up and working for a "pass down" system to my son as I will be purchasing a new one soon.

Must now check newegg's return policy since the PSU didn't seem to be the culprit.

Unfortunately I have no spare parts to swap out and test other then memory which I've tried.

This PC is mainly left on 24/7 so to be totally honest, the powering off/reset is really the last of the concern. At very worst case I'll use the power switch to shut the PC off if NEED BE. But that seems to be the issue here on something...along with the non video read out with the monitor showing at least a bios post.

FYI - reseated CPU and still same problem...I guess supposedly it still could be a CPU issue...

Make sure your reset switch isn't shorted. That exact thing happened to my mum.

This looks almost the same as your problem to include the 8.7 error (incorrect CPU core voltage). Looks like a mobo replacement is in order.

Error

Thanks a lot! I'm wondering if it's worth it to look for a mobo/cpu combo since these are probably so cheap now. I even noticed some places stopped selling them and see Abit went belly up.

I just need to get this back up and running as it's being passed down to my son after i purchase my new PC.

Any recommendations on mobo replacement, if I should get a combo order and even where at since these seem to be very limited currently.

it would need to support current ram, 2 ide and 2 sata HDDs, and the PCI-e vid card and of course fit the current case, haha

not the Nforce chipset, but so far this is the only one I've been able to find that's still sold and in stock.
ASUS Socket 939 VIA K8T890 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard (A8V-VM SE )

http://www.amazon.com/Socket-M...&qid=1238853254&sr=8-2

as a side note - please tell me I'll be able to boot up to C: without doing a reformat and wiping out old chipset drivers and installing new for this type of board.

well the reviews don't seem to be too good for that mobo. Alot seem to die within a few months to a yr.

Anyone else have any recommendations to get this PC back up and running with minimal costs? (about the same amount as I had found)...

By "reviews", are you talking about the Newegg blurbs that people post?
If so, I wouldn't consider them reviews. They tend to be more rant than anything.
Google for non-retailer related reviews. They're more objective than the snippets that get posted on Newegg, Amazon, etc.

I was talking about reviews searched by google and brought up a lot of different misc sites.
I'm just wondering if there is a more solid board for "around" the same price. The more I put into this PC to get it back and running is less I have to spend on the new one, ha ha. Yes I NEED to make this current one function.

Why not just buy an nForce4 MB off ebay from a reliable seller?
That's the cheapest, quickest way to get your rig running again.
It will buy you time to prepare for an upgrade build down the road.;)

I would rather buy from a legit company incase a RMA is in order with the shipping. And I actually did do a quick search on Ebay and OMG most people want too much for these old boards. I can put together the above for little more then what some people are getting/bidding on these old boards.

another note - ebay is blocked at work, but other sites like newegg and ZZF are not. I have more time at work to search and look for these parts then I do at home, haha.

Dunno how good that ECS is, but it's one of the cheapest I could find to get a little combo on all of those! If anyone can find a better mobo and same or cheaper price GREAT!!

The combo deal is no longer available so the link is dead, but the mobo was:

Hey guys, found this 939 socket mobo. I shouldn't have any issues with using this one right? http://www.geeks.com/details.a...d=A8N-LA-PB-NP&cat=MBB
Asus A8N-LA GeForce 6150 LE Socket 939 mATX Motherboard w/Video, Audio & LAN

I can at least boot up to windows XP, and back up my stuff stuff before reformatting? Or can I just install the chipset drivers directly to my current OS install?

no I'm asking if these parts are ok and that I should have no issues putting them with my current case, psu, gpu....dunno anything about the jetway mobo, and wasn't sure if it was any good...
