PC powers up sometimes

I have a Compaq Presario S6000Z desktop. When I push the power button, the PC powers on, like 10 times in a row. Then for a number of days, it will not turn on, no matter how many times I try.

This has happened for ~1 year. I don't think it is a virus. I added a graphics card, memory and wireless PCI card, over 2-3 years ago.

The problem seems random. Not repeatable.

I replaced the power supply with a new one. I replaced the on/off switch (the cable that leads to the mobo). I unseated and reseated the memory. Nothing.

OS:Windows XP

Compaq Presario S6000Z
MOBO: ASUS Asus A7V8X-LA
Processor : AMD Athlon XP3000+ processor

TIA!!!

Sounds like your mobo might be shorting itself out? Have you tried taking it out of the case and seeing if it'll start up normally then?

Thanks.
Since I am a newbie at this, removing the mobo "may be" a big deal. Is there another way to figuring out if it is the mobo shorting? Can I remove the graphics, wireless cards and other stuff connected to the board?
