PC Parts Arriving Tomorrow

What I'm wondering is if I'll see a pretty substantial performance increase in newer games like F.E.A.R., NWN2 and Oblivion?

New Setup:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ Windsor 2.4GHz
BFG Tech GeForce 7950GT 512MB DDR3 PCIe
MSI K9N Platinum Mobo
2GB DDR2 667
430W Antec TruePower2 PSU
Antec Sonata Case
100GB Maxtor SATA Drive
Memorex Dual-Layer 16X DVD burner
Soundblaster Audigy 2

Old Setup:

AMD Athlon 64 3400+ 2.2GHz
BFG Tech GeForce 6800GT 256MB AGP
ASUS K8V SE Mobo
1.5GB DDR333
430W Antec TruePower2 PSU
Antec Sonata Case
100GB Maxtor SATA Drive
Memorex Dual-Layer 16X DVD burner
Soundblaster Audigy 2

The video card is a nice step up, the CPU is about the same since games don't really use the second core yet (Oblivion does a little). An extra 512 MB RAM won't make much difference in most games either, but it doesn't hurt.

Click the Video tab up above to see what to expect from the 7950.

Obviously you have already ordered everything so nothing to be done now. But in the future, try to get recommendations before you buy. Almost everyone here would have told you to go with a C2D setup.
But since you already have all those coming, you should definitely see a nice improvement in graphics. And even more while multi-tasking thanks to the second core.

nice system but yeah you should have went with a C2D.

Haha, yup. C2D would have been better, but you should definitely see an improvement in games and system performance in general with your new setup vs. your old one.

the difference will depend on what games you play and what applications you use. unless its recent games (2006-2007) doesn't look like you'll see much difference.

I could see a noticeable difference going from a 3000+@2.4ghz to a x2 3800+@2.4Ghz just doing basic stuff. The system just seemed snappier. Of course I could see a good difference going from the x2 to C2D E6300 at stock speeds 😀.

I have a very similar setup now (Athlon64 3500+ Winchester/6600GT 128MB) and will be upgrading relatively soon. I don't know why (aside from brand loyalty) you chose an athlon over a C2D.

I think AMD makes a fine product and I've loved my Athlon64 (it smoked the P4 it replaced at a slower clock speed) but right now the C2D is the better processor.

That new video card is pretty sweet though - it should smoke the 6800 you currently own.

You should see a decent performance increase, but most of that would be from just the video card.

QFT. I saw the title and just laughed.

Don't get me wrong, the AM2 setups are nice. It's just that... well, same thing as what everyone else is saying.

That's a good system but unfortunately hindsight is 20-20 vision and buyer's remorse will soon kick in. Maybe instead of "parts arriving tomorrow, what do you think?" you'd be better off with "parts maybe being ordered tomorrow, what do you think?" in the future.

But still, enjoy your new PC.

I knew the C2D would be faster before I ordered, but the between the CPU and mobo it was going to put just enough over budget to make it impossible so I figured I'd just go with the AMD setup and eBay the parts when I was ready to upgrade again.

Assuming Newegg prices, your processor and motherboard cost ~$300. RAM doesnt matter since it would be the same for C2D system. E6300 is $189 (cheaper in FS/FT) and you could get a Gigabyte S3 for $109 putting your total at $298. If you got your parts somewhere else for much cheaper then this doesnt apply.

Ok, so assuming I'm NOT going to be overclocking--should I still return the AM2 setup and grab the C2Duo? I'm not sure how Newegg works with returns...especially since it was purchased with a discount through my job.

I wouldn't, as you will incur at least a 15% restocking fee, and at stock speeds there won't be much difference between a 4600+ and the E6300. The E6300 destroys the 4600+ when overclocking is added to the equation thus why everyone recommends it.

Stock 4600@2.4ghz vs E6300@1.8ghz = pretty even, the 4600 may even be a tad faster in some things

Overclocked 4600@ 2.6-2.7ghz vs E6300@ 3.2-3.5ghz = E6300 pwns

No, no, just enjoy your freshly upgraded system. What we're all trying to tell you is that in the future, research before buying instead of asking for confirmation afterwards.

yep list what your buying then after everyone confirms then order 😀. Besides AMD's next CPU afaik is socket AM2 and might be on par or faster than C2D. So you could just upgrade on down the road to it.

Of course that last bit might not be true(just what I heard).
