PC Magazine January Edition - Anyone else get theirs?

MichaelD

Lifer
I received the Jan 2009 edition of PC Magazine today; it came in a plastic bag with a note card inside. I figured it was a "Happy New Year" type card.

No, it wasn't. It was a card telling me that Jan 2009 is the last edition for the print edition of PC Mag and after that it would be DIGITAL ONLY. WTF?! :Q

They provide a URL to make sure your email is up to date...and for you to request a refund if you want.

Click for info.

Hell, man! I enjoy the paper copies of all the mags I subscribe to. Reading it on the screen is not the same as having the magazine in your hands. 🙁 I don't know if I'll be renewing my subscription in 2009. I'll have to see how this digital thing works out. I know I won't be reading it "page for page" like I currently do.

Well, that's the first kick in the nuts for 2009. Didn't take long, did it? 🙁

I agree, digital publications are no substitute for printed copies. I will be requesting a refund on my remaining copies. I get a lot of magazines and read them at restaurants, when eating a snack at home, take them with me when I am running sound for an event (lots of dead time to fill during setup/warmup), and none of those times do I have or want to have a computer.

I feel badly for the publishing industry because people seem to think they can find everything online so they don't have any use for magazines or newspapers. That's far from the case but the financial situation of the publishers are forcing lots of print publications to go digital.

It's incredibly annoying to try to read articles online. Most sites will feed you a few paragraphs at a time and force you to load a new page to see more. What I could skim in a couple of minutes in print takes 5x longer online, and woe to you if you forgot a key piece of info from an earlier page since you are riding the back button to try to find it again.

I seen they were doing this a few months back, it does indeed suck. That's one less thing for me to read on the can. 🙁

Yeah, most of the time when I'm reading a magazine, it's because I'm not using or don't feel like using a PC.

Got a free 1 yr subscription to Pc mag by filling out one of those surveys found in the FREE STUFF forum here.

I get both Dec and Jan issues at the same time. A few days ago, I flipped open the cover on the Jan issue and was like WTF!

Well, at least I got 2 free issues 🙂

you mean you actually like reading a mag that is 90% ads?

I don't care how many ads there are in a magazine. All I care about is whether there's enough content to justify the purchase.

Not the first and certainly not the last. Print media is heading off into the sunset, unfortunately.

Damn you digital era!!

...ok in my defense the Netflix instant watch pause thingy wasn't working on this laptop for a bit.

I posted the announcement of PC Magazine's switch a while back here in OT.

I can't imagine subscribing to a web publication for pleasure. I subscribe to magazines so that I'll have something to read away from the computer. I spend enough time in front of the computer as it is.

*slowly raises hand*

I see that hand.

It also gives you the option to switch to another mag... I switched to Maximum PC for the remainded of my subscription. If I wanted a digital copy I'd just read a website... I like having something to read in bed, etc.
