PC Locking Up

I'am having a bit of an issue here with my computer, I will list my specs at the end. I also use the on board video card if that matters, here is the issue for now.

Whenever I'am playing games the CPU Fan will spin-up the temperature will reach between 70-90c. Then it will lock my PC up, sometimes i will get BSOD other times it is just frozen.

I ran a few test like HDD, Virus Scan, memtest, Checked for latest drivers. I even went as far as to RMA my memory and reset the heat-sink with thermal compound paste, as i thought this could be the problem. But even with all this it still will occur so i am lost with ideas.

Here is my system specs.

Intel i7 2600K 3.4Ghz
Corsair 16GB DDR3 memory
Asus P8Z68-V PRO GEN3 (Bios v.3202)
Intel HD 3000, 850Mhz Video card (Driver v.8.15.10.2761)
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

I would suspect the CPU is overheating. Are you using the stock heatsink? Can you disable Turbo Boost? Does your case have decent airflow / enough case fans?

Thanks for responding.

I use stock heatsink yes, in my BIOS i use the balanced mode.
My case is the Zalman with 2 fans on top, 1 in back, 1 in front where HDD are located.

I guess i should of added to my pc specs..
Zalman Z9 Plus ATX
OCZ PSU 1000

Here are the CPU run tests. I will post GPU test shortly.

Try running more of those tests. There is an option to choose how many to run, try 50 or more. This way it has a chance to really heat up and run for much longer.

my RealTemp program is showing 92c as the test runs. it actually says the thermal status is "HOT"

here is the test 100 times on the cpu.

I'm going to say, especially for stock speeds, you're CPU is running too hot. With the GPU on the same die, running both at the same time will really cook it. I don't know why it's so hot, the stock cooler should do better than that. If the case fans are working properly (in @ front, out @ back, and proper speeds) then it should be much lower.

Pull the side panel off and test again. Make sure all fans are spinning and blowing in the correct direction, and see what temps you get.

If you push on the cooler, does it move any at all side to side? If so, one of those useless push pins on the CPU cooler isn't properly secured.

Were it me, I'd invest in a decent aftermarket cooler for your machine. You might have to remove the motherboard to install it (depending upon the one you get), but at least you shouldn't have any overheating problems afterwards. It would be money well spent given that you have a very decent CPU.

AnonymouseUser i did all that and it produced the same results
Steltek no it doesn't move its securely in on all 3 points.

Which fan is good to replace that is not going to make a lot of noise. Also it needs to fit my board as i will be soon adding a new videocard to it.

Something must be seriously wrong with that heatsink to produce such bad results. I'm wondering, though, does the CPU fan speed up as it heats up? If not, is it plugged into the correct header or do the BIOS settings prevent it?

The CM Hyper 212 Plus is a great budget heatsink (I have three), but requires removing the motherboard to install it, and is very large so you'll need to be sure it will fit your case.

The Zalman CNPS 5X Performa has a great price, decent reviews, and looks to be an easy install.

I'm hoping that's a typo because there are four push-pin mounting points:

Yes i meant 4 i didn't notice i typed that lol.

AnonymouseUser, are they noisy fans? Also, my case has the back motherboard exposed for installing these types of CPU Fans so i shouldn't need to remove the board. It appears these fans are very cheap in price too not sure what is the difference from it is to the $40-$60 range ones.

As for the other question you had asked, Yes it does speed-up but once i start hearing it going i am sure to get a freeze up shortly after. The funny thing about that is, if i minimize the game the fan will go back to normal speeds, but once i bring it backup, it starts up again with the noise. Is that normal procedures?

edit:
Just measured my case and this is the only measurements for a new fan. Once I add my MSI GTX 560 card it maybe even more tight not sure.

The Hyper 212 Plus is one of the best values in heatsinks right now, very popular, and highly recommended. They are great for overclocking, should keep your CPU quite cool, and only gets noisy if you hit max speed on the fan (which won't be often if at all).

According to Frosty Tech, the Zalman is a little louder than the Hyper 212 Plus at max fan speed. Like the Hyper 212 Plus, though, it won't likely hit max speed without overclocking. Here's their review of the Hyper 212 Plus (a little old, but still relevant). The Hyper 212 Plus should keep the CPU ~5C cooler than the Zalman, but if you aren't overclocking you won't notice the difference.

zalman [FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Z9 Plus ATX Mid Tower Case
and soon to have videocard,

The way the motherboard is build is kind of making it difficult to just fit any fan on there.

I guess my concern is, some people have reported certain fans not fitting bc of the ram slots, and since i got them all full it may pose an issue.

Well, unless your RAM has tall heatsinks, you should be fine. This user has all 4 slots filled Corsair Vengence RAM and the EVO. The first link I posted show all 4 slots filled also.

How about some Newegg reviews: 22 results with that motherboard.

The second review says:

I have had no problem with this on the Asus P8Z68- v Pro Gen3 board that I purchased. I am running 4 sticks of RAM and there is no interference between the fan and memory. The fan does sit very close to the first stick but does not touch.
