Do mods permanently change your game? I have never installed one before. I want to try the Desert Combat mod for BF1942. What will happen when I install it? Will I still be able to play regular BF1942? Or do I have to reinstall BF1942 if I want to play it again? Remember, this is coming from a person who has never installed a mod before.

In case no one else answers: It's different for different games, usually the mod comes with installation instructions (often a text file named README) that explain it fully.

I don't have BF1942 so I don't know about this specific mod.

So there are actually mods that permanently change the game so you can never play it again unless you reinstall it? Man, that seems like it would be kind of a pain in the ass. I really want to see what's up with the whole mod phenomenon, but not if it involves wrecking my game installations.

Mod's almost never "wreck game installations." Typically, they can be activated and deactived within whatever game they modify. That is the case with DC. Once you enter BF1942, DC can be activated and deactivated. You can continue playing regular BF just fine.

well, if its a multiplayer game mod, then, no it will not change the game....when you play online, you have to find a desert combat server, then that mod will load...don't have game but assuming thats how it works.

I should say that in certain rare instances, mods can "permanently" alter the game (permanently here meaning that you would need to reinstall the game to get rid of the changes). However, this is almost never the case, and when it is it's usually either a) not a good mod or b) explicitly stated. Offhand, the only mods I can think of that would do this are those that have been released for the demo of Far Cry. These mods involve making direct changes to some of the game's core files, so unless you back them up, you're not getting them back without a reinstall of the demo. Even here though, the only reason the mods are like this is because it's a demo. It should not be the case with the full game.

Edit: What I'm trying to say is that you should not let the fear of ruining the original game from preventing you from trying out mods. Mods will almost never alter the original game, especially when talking about a high profile game like BF or Half Life.

You got it right. That's how it works for BF1942 and Desert Combat.

desertcombat is very good, and acts like ea's own mods like rise to rome...secret weapons. you can choose which to play even inside the game.
