PC Games Rant!

Ok whatever happened to just pop in the cd, install and play. Now even with demos I have to get the upgrade patch, get this fix, get this update. WTF?

My gripe with companies like EA, are that having to install the patch, fine, I have to to join a server. But go to EA and try and get the patch...HAHAHAH! That's really funny. You have to go to a mirror site, which in turn wants you to register, then they send you 4-5 pop-ups, then install. (Which update 1.1 for BF will not work for some Dang Reason)

I understand that when a new game comes out there will be updates to improve it's perfomace, which is great, but when I buy a game I shouldn't be bogged down with bloat and bs, just to play. Also with SpearHead, good Lord, did they not know what they were doing by the time they came out with that? There is an update for the Demo, within the first week? I guess that's the first time they actually had to use the Q3 engine.

Personally all the crap is going to ruin PC gaming IMO. Why can't there be "Install on Demand?" is that too much to ask? Having to have a T1 or better connection to host BF? Common I just now have cable, 56k people are just SOL

There are a few games that have NEVER required a single patch. I reinstalled "American McGee's Alice" and notice that there are no updates required (except 1 for a Matrox card).

I understand with the proliferation of competing and newly released video cards, there is a need for patches.

My solution: Buy games that are well-reviewed as "bug-free". And don't buy then right away (unless you "trust" the company as I did with NOL2 - and that even had a rather painless patch for the Radeons).

Game patches, believe it or not, is a way of life. Because the internet is everywhere, developers can release sloppy code, get away with it and patch it later. This can be a double edged sword.

On one hand, if they release soon (to have some noticeable bugs), their title gets a bad rap and not as many people buy or continue to use their product.

On the other, if they release soon and their title isn't well received (reguardless of the bugs), they move onto the next title without patching.

That's basically it. They get "most" of it done before they go gold, then they continue to work on it and release the updates when the game goes on sale. The worst form of it imo is with morpg's because they know everybody is connected to the net obviously, so sometimes games get really sloppy.

Then they should all have a built in updater rather than forceing the user to hunt down the patch and deal with file planet and the like....

This can make things easier, as long as the system works well. I always had problems with the tribes 2 autoupdater. Half the time it would dl patches I already had and skip over the ones I didn't have. Eventually I just started dling the patches independent of the game. It's kinda funny that a system designed to make the patching system easier needed to be patched itself.

Yea but for EA to not even host the patch is lower than lame. They publish the game but don't offer the friggen patches... C'Mon.

I'm a proud owner of RTCW and it rules in my book, this is how a game should be published, updated and managed. It has Punkbuster built into the game engine and when a patch is available it will tell you through the Multiplayer screen and send you to the appropriate server to download it.

Let me continue to rant.....

BF1942 is so full of bugs and the netcode is still in early beta if you ask me. We should not be paying to beta test this stupid crap and on top of that the game is now infested with multiple cheats, aimbots and whatnot and the 1.2 patch won't even address any of the more serious cheats and AE doesn't give a rats ass about it.

For this I will administer my own brand of Justice for being totally ripped off by EA.

I hear that! You hit the nail on the head with that one. BF is fun, but I think the reason they are pushing for such an early release of the second part, is because people are realizing how bad the netcode, and other parts of the game are. I personally see the game as an overhyped beta. IT's more like something that was leaked than a final edition.

I can personally say that Ive never had a problem with the netcode being sh*t... Never lag, never teleport etc... This is actually the 1st EA game thats given me no problems ::knocks on wood::

I've learned to deal with it...its become a part of my expectations in PC gaming. I actually look forward to patches. Honestly, I would rather play with buggy software than to have to wait 3-6 years for a game (like over in console-land). That way I can either tell the game sucks early, or if it just needs to be patched.

And yes, the ones I really feel bad for are the poor bastids on 56k or worse....they shouldn't have to deal with all that.

I would like to add my rant.

I paid $50 for Unreal Tournament 2003 and during the install had to read the license key from the back of the CD Jewel case (it said this during the install). Guess what? THERE IS NO JEWEL CASE HAHA THE F*CKIN JOKE'S ON YOU HAHAHAHAHA.

I get my $50 cd's packaged in paper frickin sleeves! PAPER! Sure the instruction booklet was all designed to fit in the jewel case but WHERE THE HELL DO I BUY A TRIPLE CD JEWEL CASE????

I just know some day I'm going to either A) Fuxor my cd's up, scratch em or whatnot B) Lose that stupid booklet with the code on the back of it.

Thanks for listening, have a great weekend!

Until such time as outrage affects game sales, game publishers will continue with premature release. Right now we live with it. Developers would prefer to test more but publishers often make arbitrary deadlines and/or test inadequately.

On the PC side you usually get a lot more than simple bug fixes and that makes up for some of the inconvenience.

Case in point: I just bought Ghost Recon. The patches were about 55 MB total. Pretty insane but at the end of the day I get a solid product and a few additional features. On the downside, Ghost Recon wouldn't run at all until I applied the No CD patch....but CD-in-the-drive requirements are another topic altogether. 🙂

Ref UT2K3. I thought it was kind of cheesy not including a jewel case myself.

Luckily, we have a guy at work that has boxes of old empty jewel cases (I have no idea how he stores his CD's) that he told everyone to take if they needed them. I found a few 3 CD cases and more than enough 4 CD cases.

Try hitting the bargin Cd bin's. Maybe you can find a $2 CD that has 3 or 4 CD's included. Use those as coasters and protect your UT2K3 disk....or just put each Cd in a single case. Anything's better than that paper sleeve BS.
