PC games just arent fun anymore...

I dont know why they arent fun anymore...

I remember enjoying pc games a lot back in the day with old games like Dune2, Doom2, Wolfenstein, Decent, Diablo, FF7...

I think the problem now is that those games have only evolved slightly into newer more eye-appealing games...but the bottom line is that they are basically the same games we've been playing for the longest time.

The older games were fun because they were the frontrunners of their genre and we've never played them before.
Imagine playing a first-person shooter for the first time...or a Real-Time-Strategy...

Now when "new" games are released we already know that we've "been there" and "done that" to an extent.

These are some new games I've tried:
I played Max Payne for 30 min and got sick of it.
Played RTCW and got sick quick.
CivIII was good for one campaign.
Age of EmpiresII was good for two campaigns.
Played Black and White and wanted to shoot myself afterwards.
Wanted to throw-up in the middle of Serious Sam (the worlds are HUGE...made me dizzy)

BOTTOM LINE: these new games aren't offering anything new.

dpk777: To an extent, yes some of the newer games are just rehashes of older games (with nicer graphics) but there are still some games out there that come out and are totally different. 😉 Have you tried Operation Flashpoint or Ghost Recon? Those are pretty nice. 😉

In some instances your right. But honestly, I can't play those old game nemore. I have the original Doom Trilogy. I loaded that up and got a head-ache in 5 minutes. I guess I'm used to 3D accelerated graphics. Yes, a lot of games are rehashes, but some games are worth noticing.

Op Flashpoint like the previous said and the Gold Upgrade w/c adds a new Russian Campaign, Homeworld and Homeworld: Cataclysm, No One Lives Forever, Serious Sam, Max Payne.

I'm thinking of purchasing Uplink from Introversion as I already finished the demo. Of course, it's not realistic but it's an interesting game.

Medal of Honor should be interesting even if it is a fps based on a Q3TA engine but I'll probably pick that up. Jedi Knight 2 and NOLF 2 look pretty good also.

If you want a new experience, go get Black & White. It doesn't resemble much of it's predecessors. They totally did away with icons i.e. buttons that you push on the screen. The entire screen is your view of the world. No frame around it even.

You cast miracles (like magic spells) or summon a leash for your Creature (in game avatar) by gesturing with the mouse! Like making swirls and box shapes and back and forth movements. It's totally amazing. It's a fun game too. You're a god(!) and you rule over a people and you take care of them. If they pray to you and stuff, you get more power to do more miracles. You attempt to spread belief in yourself to the villages that lay outside your realm of influence. You also battle other gods along the way, and have different plots to solve.

It's an amazing, nearly seamless experience. Revolutionary.

Or how about Sacrifice. If you like real time strategy gaming, than this is it. The graphics are amazing, as you control a wizard and cast spells and summon creatures. The spell effects are great and I love it when I can summon up toranadoes, volcanoes and earthquakes. Check it out for only $10.00

I agree w/ dErnEuegOtt, as you get older you expect more out of a game other than eye candy. Recently, I've been playing more and more Mature rated PS2 games, since they actually make me want to get to the next level.

I also used to have way more fun playing PC games. Maybe we are just getting older ...

maybe so. I remember diablo coming out and everyone freaking out over it. Sure it looked cool, but it sucked as an RPG and all the action was :

click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click,click, etc

Maybe I am getting too old for computer games. I do enjoy crazy taxi 2 on my dc I got for Christmas!

yeah i agree... but if tou notice that there are still some games worth playing lately... and trust me .. dont believe reviews! hehehe j/k

sayy... the latest games which are fun are: Max Payne, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, SOul Reaver 2

Try different kinds of games like city-building or tycooning or creature-raising, and read reviews to see what really is fresh or different in the types you've already been playing. And ask here and/or in the usenet games groups.

There are plenty of fresh and enjoyable variations within genres -- RPG's like Planescape and Fallout 1,2 are quite different from Baldur's Gate; turn-based games Fallout Tactics and Jagged Alliance are both fun succesors to X-Com that don't feel like more of the same, etc.

Snap out of it Buffy! 🙂

i am starting to think the pc games are the same, it's just me that isn't fun anymore. there seems to be ample social evidence to support this when i go to parties.

<< I also used to have way more fun playing PC games. Maybe we are just getting older ... >>

Perhaps! I stopped buying games for the PC last year (the only games I play now are CounterStrike, Starcraft and Diablo II, and thats only once in a blue moon).

Instead of upgrading my graphics card to the latest GeForce 3, I used the cash to buy a PS2 - best decision I ever made!

I think its simply cause games these days tend to suck.

I still play games pretty often, but the games I play are like 3 years old on avarge, the oldest probably being Doom1.

New games suck!
Well Im hoping WarCraft 3 will change that 🙂

"New games suck!

We'll that's your opinion, but I don't think new games suck. I guess you've never tried Combat Overlord, Sacrifice, dues ex and Age of Empires? Those games kick ass...

Maybe it's because I've only been into PC gaming for 3 years, and Half life got me started.

Also, what the hell is the big deal about Counterstrike? Yes, it's a good game but doesn't it get boring?? There are other great games out there!!

Online Multiplayer games is what keeps PC gaming fresh for me. I still enjoy the odd single player experience, but games like Everquest, Tribes (and Tribes 2), and RtCW keep me glued to my chair.

Another vote for Operation Flashpoint. You can go from being a soldier on the ground to piloting a helicopter, airplane or driving a tank, car, truck, APC. There's a mission editor included with the game to build your own missions or you can download new missions off the net. The game that comes to close to the freedom of Operation Flashpoint is Battlezone. I think Battlezone is a classic and if you haven't played it then your missing a big part of PC gaming history.

You're just playing the WRONG games.

Sad thing is, there's too many wrong games out there because they make the most money somehow. I'm sure deer hunter made more money than System Shock and Thief did combined.. but take a guess as to which games I will love forever, and which I wouldn't even waste the time to break in half?

They're "old" in the sense you could probably run them with a voodoo 2 just fine, but damn they're incredible games.

Baldur's Gate
Planescape Torment
System Shock 2
Thief 1-2
Deus Ex

And a bunch more awesome, unique games out there. They're not as easy to find as the Diablos and Wolfensteins, but they're incredibly great to play.

True, true..... But you know what. As long as those games make a ton of money, then the publishers will still make games for the Hardcore PC crowd. They can take more risks and absorb more loss when a game such as deer hunter, the sims or harry potter sell millions of copies.

Also you want revolutionary:

Check out the new MMORPG: Star Wars!!! It's being developed by Verant (the guys behind Everquest) and it's going to be a huge hit!!!

And it's a PC only title!!

😉😉😉

So since when do you guys play computer games?

I got my C64 in 1988 and my first PC in 1991.

I have to agree with you... PC games are not as fun for me as well. I remember the back in the days when Doom2 and Duke Nukem 3D and Warcraft were the games to play. I'm alway turning to my DC when it comes to gaming now... I love TD:Lemans! I still own many new PC games like RTCW, Ghost Recon, Diablo 2... but the last PC game to hold my attention was Jagged Alliance 2 (wicked game!). Maybe we are just growing out of pc gaming... nah! Later guyz!

Firstly, I dont like CS that much, it was fun back in beta 5.2, but after that it's been going downhill.

AoE is one of the most boring games I've ever played, and AoE II looked like an expansion of AoE to me.
Deus Ex was utterly unplayable on my TNT2-Ultra cause they used the cursed Unreal engine, so I never went beyond a warezed version that was promptly deleted.

Other games that many seem to like, but that never got to me, or didnt work for me:
Baldurs Gate, I & II(booooring storyline)
Planetscape Torment
System Shock, didnt work on Win2K.
Black & White
Wheel of Time

To mention just a few.
Half Life was really good, as was Freespace 1&2, and Jagged Alliance 2 as well as StarCraft were good as well, those are pretty much the games Im playing today.
But still, they dont compare to games like Loom, Myst, Doom, Syndicate, Chaos Engine, Pinball Fantasies&Dreams, and others, they just dont make games like that anymore.

In my opinion, I think we need to step away from are computer's and game consoles from time to time. Take a little break. I think that we tend to easily get burned out when we sit and stare at our monitors and television sets all day.

I've found that when I do this (usually 1-2 week break) I come back amd I'm ready to tear into some new games. Games seem so good then. Evne UT. which is an 2 year game seems great when I take a good long break and I usually enjoy it that much better. 🙂

That's a shame because Dues Ex is such a revolutionary title. It does have it's problems, but it has one thing which most games don't have: An awesome story line!

"AoE is one of the most boring games I've ever played, and AoE II looked like an expansion of AoE to me."

AoE is great on line. I've played that game so many times on the zone, that's it's a big blur 😉😉😉😉😉😉 But I'll play this game every once in a while.

"Black & White"

Man, this game was a huge disssapointment for me, and a lot of fans. Can you say BORING!!

Anyway, I don't get pumped up anymore like I used to when I would read previews of a particular game. When the game comes out, I'll do some extensive research before I purchase that particular game.. 🙂🙂🙂
