PC Gamepads, need suggestions please

I've recently been looking for a specific type of gamepad for use with PC games (especially since I bought Street Fighter 4), but the one type I am looking for seems to be quite rare. I always liked two very specific console controllers back then and to this day it still hasn't changed, namely the PlayStation controller (either Dual-Shock or not) and the second Sega Saturn controller model (and to some extent the original XBOX controller model, the "bulky" one for "occidental hands"). The reasons for that are numerous, but it could be compressed into one, briefly said I always preferred a controller with a 6 thumbs buttons layout (think either Sega Genesis or Sega Saturn controllers) more specifically for fighting games. And then comes the PlayStation controller for practically everything else. In the end I like both types (what I consider a "type" is one controller with "only" 4 buttons for the thumb, and another type with 6 buttons, usually placed in two rows of three buttons). I like to call such preference the "6 buttons syndrome", you may think what you wish but honestly it's been like this since... well, since a lot of time, I can't even recall where it started, I think it comes from Arcades or the Sega Genesis days (I've owned a Genesis before the SNES, and I remember that the transition from the Genesis controller to the SNES one was tough for certain games, not all genres however).

Alright, so for the PC I've recently been looking for a USB gamepad (Plug and Play, which requires drivers or not, as long as it's compatible with at least Vista x64) and I might have found one, and only one so far which corresponds to my needs, but there's a problem, it got very mixed reviews from what I've read, some users have been reporting fast degradation over a short period of time, and that the buttons were losing their responsiveness, additionally that the drivers and software provided by Saitek (the manufacturers) for configuration is so bad that the user can't select specific game functions for specific buttons. That one controller in question is Saitek's P990, which by itself is a revision of previous similar Saitek models (such as the P880), it has the exact same physical shape than the PlayStation controller except for minor differences such as the directional pad, the six thumb buttons layout (à-la Sega Genesis) and an extra button (probably a "select" or "start" button) on top of the six thumb buttons rows: http://www.saitek.com/uk/prod/p990.htm

It has completely useless blue LEDs when it's on, apparently, and I'm certainly not looking for that kind of superficial extras on a controller that I won't be looking at when playing in the first place, but I don't think I'll have much choice. Basically I'm writing all of this because I wanted to know perhaps from any of you who might know more about PC gamepads if you would happen to know about the exact type of gamepad that I'm looking for. The thing is that I will go with that Saitek gamepad if I can't find anything else, it's not very expensive (depends on where I buy it, obviously, I've seen it for around $15 at Amazon, and as much as $25 or $30 on NewEgg and eBay, at least so far), so if I end up being disappointed I guess it wouldn't have been that much of a loss.

Do any of you have suggestions?

By the way the controller doesn't need to have 10,000 buttons, basically what I want is a 4-way, 6-way or 8-way directional pad (doesn't matter, as long as it ain't too small like the one on the Sega Dreamcast), "select" and "start" buttons. To be honest I am very surprised to see that such controllers for the PC are so rare, I did search for them on Google and after a while and the only one that kept coming back was that Saitek controller, if it wasn't for the several bad reviews I've read of it I would have bought it in a heart beat. If not I might have to look for more obscure custom replicas of console controllers with a USB cord instead (I did spot a nice Sega Saturn replica with a USB cord on eBay, maybe I could think about that one as well, but those controllers rarely have any "official" support nor even any drivers at all).

Thanks for your time and help.

I've got an older model Saitek Rumble Force, which at least looks similar to that one. It is pretty good. The Dpad is, of course, the weak spot, but it isn't too bad. It's actually a lot better than most of the other PC controllers Dpads that I've used, and a whole lot better than the orginal Xbox Dpad.

That Sidewinder Maximillian posted is possibly the best controller I've ever used. I had one for about five years until thousands upon thousands of rounds of Tetris finally broke the down button. It actually feels a lot like a Genesis controller, but a little more comfortable with the long handles on the side.

I have a PS2 controller that I use for my PC but honestly the best is the Xbox 360 controller. It already has drivers built into Vista and many games automatically map the buttons like it'd be on Xbox. It doesn't have 6 face buttons like you want but it's still a good controller.

Sidewinder gamepad has always worked for me, comes in USB form, dunno where you can buy it or if they make it anymore but theres plenty on ebay, saw one for £5 so they are pretty cheap. Good quality, its not shown but theres two shoulder buttons as well.

Thanks guys and thanks Maximilian for that specific suggestion, but it doesn't look like the Sidewinder has any shoulder buttons does it? I'd prefer it if there were at least two of those as well like on the SNES or on the Saturn controller. There's one of those console controllers replica I've spotted, a "Saturn model 2" USB replica on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-BLACK-SEGA-...tZVideo_Games_Accessories?hash=item19b9252f4f

That kind of controller is just almost perfect for me, but that one in particular "lacks" one button in my opinion, there's a start button in the middle (red button) but there's no select button, but I guess we can't have everything. If I ever buy that one instead of the Saitek P990 I'll have to map "missing" functions on my keyboard due to a small amount of buttons on the controller I'd presume, but I don't know if that's possible, but I will find out soon enough. And as others have mentioned, yes, controllers that do not have six buttons for the thumb are good as well, as I mentioned I like the PS controller, I also like the XBOX 360 controller, but I prefer specific controller layouts for specific types of games.

At least I have two choices as of now (Saitek and that Saturn replica), additionally I've just read another review of the Saitek P990 mentioning that the wire is extremely short.

I've still got the original Sidewinder controller (the one with the gameport connection). That was a great gamepad.

Hah ditto, its sitting in the "comp stuff" box since nothing uses a game port anymore :(

@OP yeah it has shoulder buttons, i said that in my first post :p theres only one on each side though not two like the playstation/xbox 360.

Indeed, indeed I noticed. Very interesting. Are the buttons sensible? Or do I need to put noticeable pressure before they respond?

Ehm *grabs controller* they feel and work just like the ps3 ones, not much pressure required.

That's good to know.

But it's not USB? http://img1.classistatic.com/cps/po/091215/147r8/68877a2_27.jpeg

Is there a USB model?

Additionally, I found another candidate, finally. It's the Logitech's Wingman, there are two variants from what I've seen, the first one looks decent: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-WingM.../dp/B00004VUGN

But the other model, cordless however, looks better, but I haven't found it being sold anywhere and I wonder if it would work on Vista x64, I also wonder if Logitech ever made a corded variant of it: http://img.jeuxvideo.fr/00055972-photo-logitech-wingman-cordless-rumblepad-n-2.jpg

When looking on the Logitech's web-site both controllers aren't shown at all, they might have been discontinued by now.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...name=Microsoft

I have one of those, If you can swallow the price that its all you'll ever need.

Thanks for helping but your current link sends me to a page listing Windows 7 Retail and some random products, I think your link isn't correct. And thanks The Boston Dangler I'll keep that one in mind if all else fails, we never know, I might make an exception and go with a 4 thumbs buttons layout and try to adapt to that instead.

Alright, thanks Maximilian, much appreciated, and everyone else, thanks for your time. I got enough choices for now, I'll go with the Sidewinder, and then I'll see, so no need to discuss this any further guys.
