Pc freezing randomly

Hello guys, from the start of the summer 2013 my pc has been freezing constantly almost everyday with the exception of the autumn when it simply didn't frozen a single time. Then it started again and by the start of 2014 it stopped freezing again. So what it happens is that it makes a funny noise like mmmm then lowering the pitch then it freezez. If I restart it it will do the same noise when it's booting up or after it's booted. The only way to fix it is to put in and out the ram and the hdd and the praying that it will work. I have to do it many times in order to work.
My specs are mobo:nf2aml cpu:amd athlon x2 5200+ 2.5ghz gpu:9300ge hdd:seagate 250gb psu:450wats 4gigs of ram ddr2 800mhz. From what i can tell it's a hdd problem because sometimes it moves smooth then when it's about to freeze it simply stops working. I did a ram verification of some sort but it didn't show a problem. My hdd is pretty old almost 7 years but the ram is (just) 2 years old.
Anyone can tell me an utility or something to verify my pc?
Thanks for the help and I hope my english isn't that bad

I have to mention that a week before I cleaned my pc and i mounted all the components toghether and i booted the pc and no problem and I forgot to plug in the internet wire. I pulled out the pc case and plugged in the internet wire and then the pc froze. I mean I was doing this for years, for example to switch between speakers and headsets etc. Could this be the problem?

Sounds like a fan is failing. I would guess your CPU fan, but it's hard to be absolutely sure - it might be the video card fan. If you can run it with the (side of the) case off and tell us which fan is making the sound, I could be more certain.

From what i can tell it's a hdd problem
If you unplug the HDD, run Linux from a LiveCD for awhile, and it still freezes up, it's not the HDD.

Definitely stop messing with your RAM. That has nothing to do with this problem.

I downloaded cpuid hwmonitor and tested the gpu then the pc restarted and the funny sound came back. I guess the gpu overheated or sth? I have the say that the gpu's fan is very small.

When testing your GPU use something like GPU-Z to show the temperature. That will tell you if its an overheating issue.

You really need to track that sound down to a particular component if at all possible. If running GPU tests makes it start and crashes your computer semi reliably then stick your head inside the machine and work out precisely which component is producing it. It might be that component or it might be something else but that is the place to start.

Checked for bulging / bursting / burned / leaking capacitors on the motherboard yet?

So I used Gpu-z two times now, yesterday that rendering test made my pc freeze but now it didn't. I have no idea why, but i think it's because today i just booted my pc then started the test.
