I'd like to see some material that shows enabling xmp reduces the likelihood of errors. afaik, it's an overclocking tool.

do a simple google search with the motherboard model and the word "freezes" and then look at the fourm threads where people were able to fix the issue.

im not trying to reinvent the wheel. just relaying what i found.

yes but after configuring xmp, did you reinstall windows? or just boot into allready installed windows?

I fail to see what re-installing windows for this would accomplish. Memory temporarily holds data. If the computer crashes with it enabled, the user would just turn it off and continue on his merry way, since the data is on the hard drive.

File system errors? Chkdsk /r would have taken care of that.

Plus there is the type of crash - never a blue screen. Usually, when memory is an issue, unless you are just flat out giving it way too low a voltage, you will get a blue screen, at least once, and it would at least start to do the dump.

Well, I'm not the one making the assertion. Just post a link to your source, it's not that hard.

I don't remember if XMP was enabled when I recently reinstalled windows, but I guess I'll try that just for the hell of it

Reinstalled windows again with the RAM set to XMP, and still had a freeze.

Hmm, this is a toughie indeed, I trust you bought a decent PS, I used to go with cheapies until I got sick and tired of replacing them and got an Antec earthwatts 2 years ago, zero problems since. You might want to buy a cheap PCIe vid card just to eliminate the one you are using as a possible source (or install the card your using now in another system and see if you have lockup issues with that system), it's possible you current card and MB just won't "play nice", I have a Phillips "47 TV that works fine with some HDMI devices and flat-out won't work with some cable boxes, weird..

I had a cheap GeForce 9400 GT lying around that I used, and the system froze even with that.

going back through the thread, i see you tried a diffrent video card. Did you ever try a different pci-x slot for the video card?

is this system overclocked or is the 4.4ghz speed from Turbo boost?

have you tried the system at stock settings or disabled turbo boost?

another thing that came to mind... do you have Lucid virtual installed?

the 4.4 was from turbo boost, it's been running at 3.8 for awhile. I've set the bios to default, hit the CMOS reset button, and even taken the battery out to clear everything in order to run at stock settings. Still no luck.

Yesterday I even removed the cpu cooler, and reapplied thermal paste to the cpu just to see if that would help. Unfortunately it didn't.

Why do you not take action? Nobody is going to come here with a magic bullet answer. It's either the motherboard or the CPU... you have to do the work to find out what the problem is.

It's tough when you don't have more than one of the suspect part, but you just have to bite the bullet and get a motherboard, or send yours out to be checked.

I agree, time for a RMA, you've tried just about everything, get a different board this time, if possible.
