Hello, my first post and topic on these forums, yay!

I built this computer for myself about a year ago, has been great to me for gaming:
AMD athlon64 2800+
Aopen AK89 max mobo
Sapphire ATI radeon 9800pro
512 megs mushkin ram
WD 80 gig hd w/winXPpro
WD 120 gig hd w/win x64 (just added this weekend)
Lite-on DVD/CD-rw

yea upgrades coming this christmas heh..my main dilema is that my gf, who i live with, is always saying i hog the computer and she never gets to get on and do her stuff(surf the web and IM) so can anyone recommend the cheapest most decent pc that i could build...i wont give a maximum price range as we just want cheap!

anyways thanks, and glad to be on the forums :)

If it's just for your GF and she's just gonna be surfing the web, go get one of Dell's cheapies. I think a full working system with monitor and everything can be had for $299, or was it $399??

Anyway, that is your best bet, unless of course this is your excuse to build another rig yourself... ;)

I'd rather have Dell tech support than crapusa or worst buy personally.

ANything over 900 Mhz would be good for that if you can find a used system, and stick it in a new case, or I've seen thoose MOBO and CPU cobo's with On board everything really cheap.

256 MB of Ram will do for her to.

You may want to look into the Mac mini, as it'd probably be perfect for her uses (with 512+ RAM of course). It'd also be generally easier for you as the main form of tech support, as you currently don't need to worry about viruses and spyware.

go over to tigerdirect or some similar store and just buy their cheapest PC...you could easily get something for $200 or so

bs a quad operton rig (each dual core) with a tyan thunder and 2 quadros 4400's and 8 gig ram and 6x15k 127gig hard drives at raid 5 will be the better web surfing-machine-only option than yours!

Don't believe the hype, yo.. see the rig in my sig? it's not the only machine I've got (thank God! ) but it is for real and it's the one my wife uses everyday for surfing, paying bills, checking email, etc.. the thing runs like a clock. Seriously. No frills, no bells & whistles, nada, just the basic necessities. Oh yea, it's running XP Pro w/out a stutter.

If you really wanna keep the costs down just look in the classifieds this Sunday and find a PC someone's selling cuz their moving or whatever. You can prolly pick up one for $125-$150 (w/ a monitor) that'll do what you're wanting it to just fine.

Beware of buying Cheap PC's from Internet stores. Many sell really lousy hardware that may not even work. I would not call PC Chips a bargain at any price. Better off just buying a Dell. The Cheap ones are 400Mhz Celerons but they are fine for Chatting and stuff. For just a little more a midrange computer with a AGP or PCI slot may be possible. Even a 533Mhz FSB Celeron is an improvement.

Lots of gamers sell their old PC's minus the fancy video card.
