PC for film editing

Alright I made a thread a long time ago and have been busy for awhile but now im back and want to know with a total budget of $1,500

What should I do? Build it part by part or get one pre-built and customized. Also what video editing software do you recommend and do I need to spend all of the $1,500 on the system I would like some left over for a good digital camcorder if possible....

Not worried about the monitor. But Keyboard and Mouse need to be included as well.....

Also plan to edit analog video so a capture card with theater 550 pro chip would be nice.

This system is strickly for video editing.

Please help I want the most bang for da buck!

strictly

Anyway...custom build it I say. The faster the CPU the better - an X2 may be good depending on the video editing suite - check them out though I've heard of some problems with dual core chips with some video editing software.

Look into Canopus hardware for editing if you are really serious about it...but it would be hard to build a DV editing machine for $1500 with stuff like that.

Well..... what programs do you use? Are you concerned with lots of storage, or will you be storing files on another comp? Do you have needs like quad monitor support? Have you built one before? What precisely do you intend to do? How much would you like left over?

buy a dell if you can get a really good deal that comes up every so often, check the hot deal forums. Otherwise build it, I'm guessing you want to load up on ram 2X 1 gig sticks and get the 400 gig WD HDD. I'd go with an Intel setup since the socket has more life in it.

for software if you're serious, you want to get Adobe premiere and maybe after effects, maybe they have academic pricing if you can get it or you can check e-bay for a copy, try to get a copy of premiere 6.5, its the older version but you'll save a lot of money. Spend the money for a book too because you'll need it.

Well For Video Editing, the "Bid Three" to have is:
- Processing Power
- RAM
- Hard Disk Space

All respectable DV editing apps are multithreaded (Stuff like Premiere). Here is what I would recommend for $1500

Case [Cavalier 3]: $75.98 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811119075
Power Supply [Antec TPII 430W]: $76.98 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103928
Motherboard [MSI K8N Neo4]: $83.49 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813130491
Processor [AMD X2 4400+]: $497.00 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103546.
RAM [2x1GB Corsair VS]: $165.00 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145505
Video Card [X300SE 128MB]: $56.99 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102617
Keyboard [Saitek Eclipse]: $53.99 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16823175103
Mouse [Logitech MX518]: $39.89 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16826104178
Firewire Card [IOGear 3 Port]: $19.98 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16815104316
DVD-RW Drive [NEC 3550A]: $42.99 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827152058
Card Reader [Opti 20-in-1]: $17.99 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820404001
Hard Drive [WD 320GB]: $ 136.48 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144394
Analog Video Converter [Canopus ADVC-110]: $231.99 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814144214

Total (Shipping Included) $1,498.75

That should be one pretty awesome Video editing rig. The Analog media converter I've got there is freaking awesome. I've got the Sony version for my computer (DVMC-DA2) and it is a must have for digitizing old VHS's, or dubbing DVD movies or scenes.

I must disagree with your Video Card choice. X300 is way too slow. The latest cards from ATI support H.263 hardware accelerated video encoding that is 10x faster than two cpu's. Nix the expensive keyboard in favor of a jog shuffle dial like the Griffin Powermate. Also Hitachi's hard drive have a special Video mode that allows for better video performance, so ditch Western digital on that one. Just make sure it is a T7k250 or 7K400 or 7K500. A pair of 7K250's in RAID 0 will give the necessary performance, IO's, and storage needed for large Video files. Value ram is fine, but Video encoding really benefits from large amouts of Low Latency memory if you can afford it get it. The poster above includes a card reader and that is not needed for video like it is for still photography. About $30 can be saved if you buy a case and PSU comination like Antec's 1088AMG.

Fianly, I own an NEC DVD Burner and it is a big old pos compaired to my Plextor. My plextor generates 8-12 times fewer C2 errors than the NEC. I get better copies and waste fewer DVD's and CD's when I use my Plextor. Any other application and I would call this drive optional, This Compueter is going tobe for Video the DVD Drive should be considered Mission Critical. The Plextor with Slot Load feature is on sale this week for $110 at Newegg.com.

What kind of editing, cuts or will you be using a lot of transitions (which must be rendered).
Phaxmodem's system isn't bad, but for editing I would probably drop down to a 3800+ and go with a Quadro video card (much better for rendering efx).
Also, you will want to go with a striped raid array if you're using more advanced editing software.

Edit: Forgot to ask...are you cutting HDTV or film resolution at all?

He has $1,500 to spend, the Quadro will bust that budget before you even buy a CPU, RAM, OS, HDD, Motherboard, Case, PSU, ETC.

There was no link in your original post. Anyways a quadro might be a bit over the top.

It depends on the software, but it still comes in at budget...
Avid Xpress Pro carries a minimum spec of a Quadro video card...

he does need a quatro, im a video editor and both the community and i think its a waste to pay that much for a video card
when a gaming video card ( which can be softmoded) will do just as good most of the time.
Quatro/FireGL cards are for companies that have the money to put into them.

Please note my handle...Viditor = Video + Editor...
I have been an on-line editor, International trainer, and design consultant in the field for more than 18 years now. While it's true that for many applications the Quadro is more than you will need, for many applications even an FX1300 Quadro isn't enough...

The video card isn't superb for a $1500 system. Get an All-In-Wonder class graphics card. Ditch the 2 gigs of RAM and get 1 gig of low CAS RAM. Get an HD that will offer 300mbps transer rates and optimized for photo and video. If you're going for a DVD-RW, get two dual layer 16x write drives. If the computer is mission critical, don't run it at RAID 0. Rather, think of RAID 1 or RAID 5 where you get the bang of 0 and 1, but will require more than 2 hard drives of the same kind. I agree with getting a combination Antec case + PSU.
Also I would probably stick with a Microsoft keyboard and mouse, for personal and professional reasons.

The AIW would be a waste...the Canopus card is better for video capture, and the AIW is too weak for solid edit programs. The Quadro FX1300 is a much better choice.
And he absolutely should NOT cut down on the Ram!! 2GB is barely adequate for serious editing...
