PC failing to boot (Asus Rampage Formula)

So my problem is as follows. My PC has worked perfectly for years but after being unused for couple of weeks during the holidays it isn't booting up anymore. Pressing the power switch in the case or the one on the motherboard does nothing. No fans spin up and the led on my PSU remains red meaning it's in standby mode.

When the power cables are connected to the morherboard the onboard power button leds and leds on the backpanel light up. There's also power coming from the usb connectors (I tried to recharge my phone).

The computer is now in parts on my desk and I've tried the following:
  • Everything else than the CPU and memory modules removed from the morherboard. No effect.
  • Memory modules tested one at a time. No effect.
  • Motherboard battery removed. No effect.
  • Tested with another PSU. No effect.
  • Both PSUs wake up with a paperclip so they're probably not the issue?

So, my motherboard is Asus Rampage Formula (Socket 775), CPU is Core 2 Quad Q9450 and the tested PSUs are Zalman ZM850-HP and Nexus NX-5000.

I think it's starting to look pretty clear that the motherboard and/or CPU is broken. Seems just strange that they would break like that while being powered off. The motherboard battery was probably dead but that shouldn't cause this kind of issues?

I just thought to ask if anyone has any ideas before I start to look for somekind of replacement parts.

PS. Sorry for any typos as English isn't my native language and I had to write this with my phone. Thanks.

Is the board still under warranty? I believe ASUS had a 3 year warranty on that particular motherboard.

I had an ASUS Rampage Extreme that did pretty much the same thing. Of course, it was just one month out of warranty when it died. Go figure.

As I couldn't find a full ATX LGA 775 motherboard anymore (the only thing sold now in that socket is micro-ATX), I ended up replacing it by building a whole new system around an LGA 1155 Sabertooth Z77 that has a 5 year warranty. I'm still debating with myself whether to pick up a cheap micro-ATX board to see if the Q9550 processor I have still works.

The bad thing about it is that, even if you can get a warranty replacement, those boards are relatively feature poor nowadays in comparison with current boards (specifically, related to memory capacity, BIOS, ability to take an SSD, USB3.0, and onboard graphics).

Not what we want to hear 🙁

I've had a look and it does pretty much seem that only MATX boards supporting socket 775 now...

Except this one:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Asus-Rampag...1_7?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1358711428&sr=1-7

lmao

It sounds like a few purchases might be in order.. I don't mind that much since I haven't touched my computer in at least 3 years...

So motherboard, ram and cpu...hmmm

Any recommendations?

Sorry to thread hijack lol but it's relevant to the OP too.

Sorry, I forgot to reply here.

I tested the mobo with a cheap Celeron and it didn't boot with it either. So I decided to get an used replacement board (P5Q Deluxe). Warranty on the old one had already ended.

Everything worked fine after that. However, about a week later my GPU cooler got busted so now I'm waiting for a replacement for that. x) Should really get a new computer but can't afford it right now.

Thanks for everyone who replied.
