Hello,

I recently built a new computer. The GPU is a radeon x1900 gt, the processor is an intel dual core, and the monitor is a viewsonic vx2025. When I play DVDs on the computer, using powerdvd, videolan, or media player classic, each time, the DVDs end up looking very bad, as bad as (i should say similar to) 700mb divx files. The image is block and there is lots of artifacting, especially in places where there are a lot of shades of one color. I have tried playing with the deinterlacing settings, but to no avail. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

I've got the same monitor but an AMD X2 3800 and a 7900GT. I have to say movie playback is pretty good. Are you sure that you have updated all of your drivers, especially your video card? I've heard that ATIs tend to have a better image quality than Nvidia for this kind of stuff. If your drivers are up to date, I would guess that the problem lies in the video card (defective maybe?)...

If you have upgraded from a CRT you may notice those things in an LCD among other things.

If it is truly bad you may want to consider RMAing the Video Card (Though if it artifacts there it should artifact else where as well).

Honestly though, you should make sure your drivers are up to date.

You know it's scaling it to the native resolution which means you will see blockyness.
It's going from 720x480 (DVD Res) to 1680x1050 which is your monitors resolution. It's probably just normal scaling issues.

For stuff like this, FFDSHOW baby!!! Yea!
Check out my guide:

Since you have an ATI card, you should be able to add the deinterlacer under the external codecs in MPC. Although I really don't have that much experience with ATI cards and media playback.
If you can't get the deinterlacer to work then just use the 5-tap lowpass in ffdshow and set it as the first thing (i think thats in the guide).

There is a big difference between 700mb divx file and a DVD but that difference is magnified when you scale it up to fullscreen on your monitor. There might be something else wrong if it really looks that bad. (which I doubt)

Thanks everyone for your help. Wizboy, I agree with you, I don't think that there are any actual technical malfunctions. I just feel like I'm missing a setting or something. But scaling may also be the problem too. I am just surprised that the difference between a 700mb video file and 4.6gb video file isn't more pronounced. I guess that shows how far divx has come.

Thanks.

Great guide! Video looks better already. One more question. How do I addthe ATI deinterlacer? I didn't find it on the list. I clicked "browse...", but I don't know what I'm looking for. The new ATI drivers contain two *.ax files, atinppt2.ax and atinpwt2.ax. Is either of these what I'm looking for?

Thanks again everyone.

In MPC, you know when you add the external codecs?
Well, you have to add the Nvidia Purevideo ones so I figured you might have to add ATI ones. I really don't know though. For what it's worth, the 5-tap Low Pass one in ffdshow works just as good. Use that one for now.

I don't think that it does it automatically.
I'll look into it.

And you'd know it when you saw it after you hit browse. It would say something with decoder or processor in it along with probably ATI. I really don't know and last I looked it was built into the ATI drivers right?
