PC desktop beeps while compressing video file and playing game

Yesterday I was using windows movie maker to compress a 2 gb file, and towards the end of the compression my computer starting beep more and more. It was a different sounding beep than one that beeps during startup.

It happened again when I was playing the sims 3 for a while.

Could it be my CPU overheating? I checked coretemps and it was hovering in the 60s C after using movie maker and the sims 3. I think the temp even went up to around 72 C.

Does anyone know what the problem is and what to do about it?

thanks!

Sounds like overheating to me, clean your fans and heatsink. If that fails reseat the heatsink, if that fails, buy more fans or get some better AC 🙂

Do you know of any instruction guide for reseating the heatsink? If I reseat the heatsink do I have to apply thermal paste again?

There's usually no "guide" for re-seating heat sinks, just make sure all the connections are secure (if its screw based, there IS such as thing as too tightly mounted) and the fan is facing the correct direction (usually drawing air from the from and exhausting out the back). And while you don't absolutely have to, it would make sense to re-apply thermal paste since if you take it apart and put it back together, you'll trap air bubbles between the processor and heatsink, and air = not as good as TIM for heat transfer.

are there any guides on reapplying thermal paste?

What other ways besides reseating are there to reduce heat?

I cleaned a lot of dust out of the cpu and re-compressed a large video file using windows movie maker and the computer didn't beep! I think my cpu might be back to normal. Thanks for your help everyone!

By the way, what program is there that can accurately tell me what my temperatures are for my cpu, gpu, etc.? I've used coretemp and realtemp, but they both give me different numbers.
