WOOD BLOCKS under desk legs. I heard a prank once played on a short guy. They put coffee cans under the desk legs and then chopped off the legs on the chair a few inches.

I am still using an old rectangular kitchen table.

I guess if the SURFACE are is large enough, having the keyboard and mouse on the same plane as the monitor is ok (i.e sometimes I "slouch" when gaming or whatever and don't want to always be reaching forward for the mouse and keyboard...)

I hate those metal & glass abominations for desks...

I have something similar to this:

51DmU46xPWL._SS500_.jpg

Got it at Costco nearly 15 years ago. The one I have looks to be a bit larger than that, with more cabinets, but the same general idea.

Like that one, it's Oak veneer over particle board...something I didn't know when I bought it...but it's holding up pretty well considering its age.

That IS a badass desk!!!!

Anandtech actually did a review on it when it first came out. Quite an amazing desk IMHO:

I would love to actually build a desk like that myself one day out of real wood. That would be a great project. I really dislike vaneers on particle board, but it's what 90% of them are.

I went to IKEA this weekend also looking for a high computer desk. They basically have a mix-and-match desk option like others mentioned. I saw one assembled that was perfect for me for $170.

Breakdown:
~$70 - Decent sized wood table top surface. Glass top is more $$
$15-30 each - Height adjustable legs.
$40 - Metal frame that spans under the table top.

I didn't see an option for keyboard tray, but I'm sure you can "mod" it. I cannot stand keyboard trays, or those damn bars or backings on a table that hits your shin every time you stretch your legs. Which guy invented that? Let's find him!

I walked away from the store thinking it was a bit expensive for such a simple setup, but I had no basis for comparison. I'm unimpressed by everything else I've seen since. I'm probably going back to that labyrinth called IKEA, but not without a map...unless I see something come out of this thread.

I don't like keyboard trays either. They are usually too flimsy or don't stay still, plus they never fit my mouse pads and I hate having to reach to use the mouse on a different level farther from me.

Regarding the backings, that's usually to make the desk less wobbly (side to side).

Went to Staples tonight, this one will extend out over my legs and not touch...

However, the 932 case is too tall to fit UNDER the desk. The desktop is big enough that it could sit on the left side of the desk but then those lower trays are wasted..

I sat a few desk with larger surfaces and no keyboard tray, it felt pretty good and I did not feel like I was right up on the monitor, so I may end up going that route...

You should be slapped with a wet trout for even considering such a thing...

Where do you live? Let me hit your local Craigslist for you.

I agree. And I even like desks with metal/glass (if styled right).

Didn't see anything on Craig's I liked...

I need a desk about 46-48" wide...

At LEAST 25" deep...(the new case is 22.7" long and I don't like putting the case on the floor)

At least 30" high...

Sounds like the Vika line. I bought two with pine table tops last Fall, and promptly sold one of them. Before that, I had another Vika with a cheaper table top. I don't like these because they're unstable. If your floor isn't 100% flat, it'll wobble. Even with a flat floor and propped up legs, it'll wobble if you hit it from the side lightly.

I went with this:

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S29806818

The Ikea Galant line is solid, sturdy and customizable. Get sick of the table size? Add another piece, or just buy a new top. I actually ended up just buying a new table top because I had a Galant a few years ago that was smaller, and kept the legs.

Check Craigslist and the Ikea AS-IS section for cheap table tops. It's popular enough that a lot of people have them and have them to sell. You're probably SOL on legs though, they are $25/$50 a pop.

Thanks for the heads up. Actually, I think what I saw might have been a Galant also, except with T legs like this one:
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S19852113

I googled this and found others mentioning wobble issues with the T legs. The A Legs in your link seem to be solid. I'm going to prop this desk against the wall, so maybe that'll buy me some anti-wobble insurance.

P.S. Is it weird that I had to add the term "googled" to Google Chrome's spelling dictionary? You'd think they'd have it in there already.

So do most of you guys have your mouse and keyboard on the desk and NOT a pull out tray?

see if you can find a store that has one so you can see how it looks put together. i see the height of 36-1/4" that might be including that little stand on the top where the monitor is sitting. ;)

I used to work at staples and we had that desk there. I never measured it, but it hit me at just below the hip and I'm 5'2". The shelf is only about 2 inches off the desk too. You'd probably get about 32-34 inches of spaces from the top of the desk to the floor. It is a little bit taller than most of the other desks we had there, so it might work.
