Hi ! pretty new on here ...Need some help re: I want to connect my PC to my Yamaha Receiver (part of my Home entertaiment system) .
Would i need to upgrade my sound card to a higher spec one (ie 5.1 capabilties etc) or would my onboard sound card be just as good.
In other words would sound quality depend soley on my receiver and speakers rather than my sound card?

Thanks

Your soundcard would absolutely make a difference in the quality of sound.

Garbage in garbage out no matter how good your receiver is.

If you have an Nforce or another mother board with decent onboard sound you might be able to get by, but if your mobo has an AC97 codec scrap the onboard and pick up a real soundcard.

one thing that helped me connecting my computer to a/v to my receiver was using optical cable for audio.

when I was using Coaxial for audio, it was interferring with my s-video, maybe using more expensive sivdeo or coaxial cable might help with interference.

If you output your sound via the S/PDIF output to your receiver, the differences between a high end soundcard and your onboard sound would be a lot less.
