It seems that 1/2 of the posts in general hardware are "I have $1200 and I want to play games good, what do i get?". And I know Im not the only one who gets tired of these. So I've been writing a computer program to basically design a system, based on a persons budget and a few other parameters.

Im planning on releasing the current beta version in a few days. I was wondering if anyone here is interested in beta-testing it.

Also, does anyone know of a (preferably free) program that can compress a Visual Basic 5 program and all it's dependancy files into a single executable, rather than an installer and a bundle of other files?...

Anyone have any comments/questions/suggestions?

some others have made a thread like this, well a guide, which has been given a sticky, but it only goes on for so long. its kind of annoying trying to update it (and it will need them constantly), and still a lot of people still ask for building help because they are picky with the things they buy. i think the mod should just make a sticky that says "if you are seeking assistance for a new system build, please fill in the following information in detail: purpose of computer, budget, personal requests, and please make sense when you're asking for help."

no but if he used anandtech's pricing engine, and made the program connect online to check prices he wouldn't, right?

We need a "Build my Rig" sub-forum.

Of course, that's not gonna happen, but i can dream...

Hey, I'll look into that.

Also, I'm going to use an external data file, so only the data file, not the program, needs to be updated frequently. And Im sure that finding the prices of a bundle of products once a month wont be hard.

And since this will be geared towards noobs, it wont need to include lots of enthusiast gear, only the basics really. I mean, if someone can't design their own system from scratch, then they probably aren't going to do too well with stuff like DFI MoBo's.

Well, we'll see how this works out anyway.

That would be awesome man. Do it. I know myself, I'm just finishing some final touches on my hope-to-have-soon system. I had a heck of a time asking people what parts have the best bang for their $. This will make a lot of people very happy.

Well, not even anandtech's pricing engine covers all the bases. I've looked at pricing engines from other sites and they seem to cover some merchants left out by anandtech's engine while leaving some holes that are covered by other engines (including anand's). To make this program work, you'll prob need to integrate multiple pricing engines, not to mention those engines don't cover rebates and bundled deals.
