I'm attempting to build a new rig for gaming on stuff like Doom 3 and Oblivion, and I plan on overclocking once I need to (i.e. not right away). This is what I have so far:

DFI LANPARTY Ultra-D - $113
Athlon 64 3200+ - $152
connect3d x800 GTO - $174
74 GB 10k RPM Raptor - $161
OCZ 2x 1GB Value DDR 400 - $203
ASUS 16x DVD - $26
Samsung 19" CRT - $188
*cries* Encore 56k modem - $11
Logitech mousey - $33
Cheapo keyboard - $11

Total ~ $1061

Beside the tips that you guys can give, I have a couple questions:

1) Where are the network cards on Newegg?
2) I'm at least going to start out just using headphones for my sound; can I forego a soundcard?
4) Should I be spending more on my video card?
5) Could you suggest a PSU for this system?
6) How about a case? I'd prefer one that matches somewhat with my half-ass attempt at a color theme.

I heard Nvidia just released a 6800GS for around $200ish if one can be found for around that I would get it over the GTO. As for power supply about anything Antec,Enermax,Fortron,OCZ,Seasonic will do just fine but I would get at least 450w or better and one with dual rail or a beefy 26amp or better 12v single rail. For the case I would just look around a go with what you like as theres so many different tastes when it comes to cases. Alot don't like Thermaltake but I think they make some of the best looking cases out.

This has been running the system in my sig for almost a year with no problems. This same PSU is like $116 on newegg. This is the cheapest price I could find and is where I got mine. Price wise I would go with this or the Antec.

Other good ones:

Heres the video card I would get if I was buying right now and was on a budget

EVGA ROCKS. For $199 you can get a nice fast card

ditch the raptor and an opteron 165 or if you dont want dual core, get an opteron 146. they both are amazing overclockers. why spend all that money on a hdd? get a cheep $80gb sata drive.

Yes, by all means, ditch the raptor and put more $$ into a better video card.

Agreed...
The Raptor won't show any improvement at all over a SATA 3G HDD, and with the $86 you save you could almost get the 7800GT (which certainly WILL show you an improvement!).

If I get an opteron will I have to change my mobo? Newegg doesn't say it supports opterons, but it's a 939 socket; is that all that matters?

yeah, the latest bios should support the opteron. just flash to the latest bios when you get the board. someone with experience with this mobo can back me up here...

That psu will handle your system no problemo, those are nice choices and make up a much better system(even though more exspencive) then the one you first listed) if your not oc'ing cooling should be no problem, though later it will help to invest in better cooling. The only thing is don't really get is getting a nice gaming mouse but a crap keyboard, if you game a lot i bet soon you'll want a better keyboard.

Well, I liked the colors. ;) And in my nine or so years of pc gaming I haven't ever felt the standard ones to be lacking in anything.

What kind of features could I get on a not-crappy keyboard?

I hate the asus dvd/rom drive. Have used 2 of them. Nothing special.

Spend a little more and get the Nec 3550 or the benq (Dont recall the number) DVDRW for around $41.00

new stuff:
WD Caviar 120GB
eVGA 7800GT
OCZ 450w Modstream
Aspire X-Cruise
Opteron 146
Audigy2 ZS

total = $1397.96 including rebates and shipping

I picked the PSU that I did because it had the most 12-volt amps. Is that going to be enough wattage and a good enough one for OCing? Do I need to worry about getting more fans if I'm not OCing yet?

Get Tagan Puma II $38 same thing as OCZ why pay for thier advertising?

Get this GT video card for $275 overclocked big time -- hangs with GTX's and is best cooler IMO

Opteron 146 seems wasteful when 3200 is $30 less.. xtra 512 MB of cache is worth 3% at best in some games..but I don't feel stongly about it.

DFI mobo kinda sucks - I hate how hot it gets and it makes me wonder when I hear lots of people killing stuff on it... I'd prolly get this ASUS for $105

The reviews on newegg make your eVGA seem kind of unstable, or were those problems from OCing overheating? It's actually $315 because the one rebate is only for the 25th.

What are the important things to look out for on PSUs? Are those over voltage and overload protection features that the Puma has good to have?

That ASUS looks great, but I didn't see any place that I could get it.

eVGA is one of the best brands of video card manufacturers hands down. Newegg reviews are usually worthless. eVGA's lifetime warrenty even covers overclocking, so if you try to run your 7800GT at like 800/3000 and blow it up (I doubt it though), they'll still replace it for free. You want to look at how many amps are on the +12V rail, since almost all current PC components draw from that rail. You want a PSU with at least ~26A, but the more, the better.

I ordered this stuff awhile because I was afraid the "massive markdown sale" was going to be over today:
DFI mobo
G.Skill Extreme 2x 1gb
Nec 3550a
Logitech MX518
WD Caviar 120GB
Aspire X-Cruise

I'm going to check out the LCDs at circuit city sometime here, so I might end up with an LCD.

From the PSU suggestions, I'd say it's between the OCZ Modstream and the Enermax Whisperer II.

I noticed the Enermax is an ATX12V; is that going to fit in my case? I read that PFC is really only useful because it reduces heat - is that true? I'm guessing that the +12V spec is the most important thing on a PSU. If that's so then I'll get the Enermax.

[edit]I didn't see your post before I posted; thanks for the info.[/edit]

Your case is ATX, so any ATX PSU will fit. The +12V is definitely the most important thing in a PSU, so get the Enermax.

Nice rig, looks awesome :)

When I built a rig similar to that just this summer, prices were alot higher :(

As for the PSU, the enermax is good. I personally have a fortron blue storm 500 which is really nice and is 77bucks with shipping at actbuy.

Tell me how it works out :)

All righty then, I'm getting an Enermax and 7800GT eVGA along with the other stuff as soon as my credit card comes.

Thanks everybody for your infinitely valuable help. I'll let you know how everything turns out. :)

The keyboard I had picked out has now mysteriously disappeared off of Newegg and is nowhere to be found on froogle. (It's all Firsttime's doing!)

So now I need some keyboard suggestions. I'd prefer a two-tone color scheme, but it's not necessary.
