I just happened to switch on my computer today, which I haven't use in over
a couple of months, and now the thing keeps beeping at me. I can't see anything on the monitor, and I get no input on the keyboard (NUM/CAPS light do not show).

Any advice to what had happened?

Here's what I did. Before I switched it on, I place a 15 gig HD into the case and switched the IDE cables from the existing HD to the new one. I switched it on and it beeped. Then I revert back to its original state and it still beeped. Did I screw my motherboard up?

Long story as to why I was trying to add another HD onto the primary slot.

The motherboard is a gigabyte GA-5AX

How many beeps. A series and stops, or just keeps beeping and won't stop? Have you removed all cards except video and disconnected all drive cable from board? Also remove and reseat the video card, sometimes corrosion builds up and prevents good contact from card to slot, or card may have become partially dislodged. Also if you are using non-keyed drive cables be sure you connected the cable properly.
