PC Anywhere 10 Help.

I trying to set up the connection between two PCs by using PC anywhere 10 through cable modem but it doesn't seem to work for me. What did I do wrong ?
I'm running window XP pro and my Brother's PC is running Win ME.
Here what I did. I have him run the PC anywhere as a host while I'm trying to connect and it said waiting to be connected.

I use remotes on my PC to try to connect. (here what I'm still not sure if I did it right. Under setting tab where it ask me to enter Network host PC to control or IP address I put the assigned HST ID number that my cable company assign to me. Am I doing it right ? I don't know what the IP address is.)

Any help would be appreciated it

First thing... make sure you can ping your brother's IP address. Have him go to start, run and type in winipcfg. Choose the network adapter in the window that pops up and look and record the IP address. Try to ping that IP address from your computer. If you get replies back, just make sure you have that IP entered correctly on your side of PCAnywhere.

You didn't mention if this was within the same cable system in the same town. The reason I ask is some cable system don't allow communication between users within the same system. You might be able to call your cable ISP's support if you can't ping him.

Also, some cable systems might even block the ports that PCAnywhere operates on. The post above with the link to Symantec above will give you info on how to change the ports.

Last thing... I've heard that XP doesn't seem to like PCAnywhere 10.0 very much. You might do a live update and see if there's any updates available for you.

Is your brother running any sort of firewall? I know that those will block pcANYWHERE communications.
 
Nickyct, using the host ID that the cable company assigns its users isn't going to work with pcAnywhere. You're going to have to use your brother's computer's raw IP address or his computer's DNS name. For example, my computer's IP address is 24.2.28.147 and its DNS name is ci744030-a.grnvle1.sc.home.com.

Also, most versions of pcAnywhere are NOT compatible with Windows XP, including 10. You need version 10.5 or higher.
 
I'd try shutting down the firewalls for a second and see if that allows things to work.
 
Also, you can go to start-->run-->type in "winipcfg" minus the " " at each end and hit enter.

This will tell your brother what his IP address is. He then can call/email/IM you that IP and you can plug it in to the IP address box under the remote's properties.
