PC anywhere 10.0 connecting at 28.8 between 2 56k modems

Just curious if this is common. When I dial in to my remote computer, why wouldn't it connect at a speed closer to 56K? Is there a setting that I am missing? Is there an upgrade that will fix it?

Thanks

I did research on this a few years ago and I don't remember the particulars, but in short, you will never get close to 56k. It's got to do with the signal being switched from digital to analog more than once.

v.90 modems are limited to 33.6kbps upload speeds, thus 2 56K ANALOG v.90 modems can never connect at higher than 33.6kbps.

ISPs use different modems in their modem banks that can send and receive at up to 56k (fcc limits this to 53k legally through power output restrictions)

If you can test this, I have a suggestion. The new v.92 modems increase the upload speed to 48kbps. Maybe 2 v.92 modems could connect higher than 33.6k, depending on line conditions and the number of times the signal is converted from analog to digital and back at the telco's switches.

Then again, the new, higher speed may be limited to dial-up access to a digital modem bank at an ISP.

Thanks Jace. the other thing I figured was that the remote PC has a cheapo V90 winmodem. That must be the limiting factor. We've got a V92 modem on our side.

Time to upgrade the remote host!!!
