PC 2700 RAM on a board designed for PC1600/2100

2 questions: First, how can I tell whether my system uses PC2100 RAM or PC1600? My motherboard can handle both -- is there a quick program that will tell me or can I figure it out from the System Info report in XP?

Second, it seems prices for 2700 RAM are cheaper than 2100 -- can I use 2700 RAM on an 845 motherboard that is made for PC1600/2100 speed? If so, can I mix the 1600/2100/2700 RAM or will this make my system unstable or, worse, harm it is some way?

thanks.

If your BIOS is old enough that PC2700 DDR wasn't commonly available, then you may need to update your BIOS for automatic detection. But even if you don't update your BIOS, you should still be able to us the Manual RAM settings to adjust for it.

thanks for the advice, but I am seeing different answers: can I just pop in the new PC 2700 RAM, or do I need to update my BIOS first and hope a newer version will make the new memory recognizable?

Should be no problem. The most you would have to do is go into the BIOS and manually enter the timmings.
