I had heard about this but have only caught about 15-20 minutes of it, during commercials of Fear the Walking Dead this past Sunday. Seemed pretty well done. My dad mentioned it was good too. That's awesome they are offering it streaming online; thank God for 2017. So much more convenient to watch it online, ANYTIME, than have to be home and free for some specific time when it airs.
ive watched all 10 episodes and it was captivating. Loved the part with Gen McPeak. I met him in Panama during operation Just Cause. i was paroling the flight-line on Howard AFB and he has his driver stops his staff car with all the pretty stars on the license placard in front of my Humvee and im like oh shit. So my partner and I get out, salute... he says "get back in the hummer and drive me around the flight-line. YES GENERAL!
all he did was just shoot the shit with a couple of lowly E-4's for a hour, i guess he just needed to get away from the bullshit Generals have to deal with and smoke and joke with a couple of cops on the flightline. The most amusing thing he said to me. was. "Airman, you know who i hate the most? 2nd Lieutenants and Colonels. why? Because 2nd Lieutenants are fucking stupid and Colonels only see stars. HAHAHAHAHHA
Nedless to say word got around the squadron fast that the General was in a hummer with a couple of airman. after we dropped the General off at his staff car we called on the radio to report to Squadron HQ ASAP... man our Major and Captain were wigging the fuck out. What did he want. what did you say. lol it was the best part of that whole tour.
The first episode was very enlightening to me as someone who grew up with this as part of my daily life as a kid and joined the Navy 2 months before they stopped awarding the National Defense ribbons for Vietnam. I knew the outlines of the French colonial era but virtually nothing of how Ho came into power and our initially somewhat positive relationship with him. I have all 10 episodes on my Plex to watch the rest when I get a chance.saw the first ep last night, high quality stuff
...imagine if truman actually read ho chi minh's letters and gave him support, also if de gaulle had not insisted on reasserting control over vietnam after ww2
dien bien phu really screwed the french over everywhere for decades "nah, the viet minh will never surround us with artillery"
one thing about the series is the coverage of the protest. the protest in the 60's and 70's compared to today were extremely violent and the numbers of people who participated is astonishing.
the Nixon tapes they played were amazing. good God that man was a total criminal.
