PBS Frontline special on Iraq and Saddam's history

:b
ok, don't watch it then. Its about over anyway. They also spoke on how Clinton wanted to go after Saddam but he didn't have the support in the US nor the UN.

fluxquantum posted a thread about this too, here's a link, I thought the show was amazing, the video of when Saddam assumed power & had his long time friends leave the room (or be dragged out by the police) & none of them were ever seen again was chilling.

I also didn't realize the reason we didn't finish off Saddam during Desert Storm was that it was like shooting fish in a barrel, and GB senior, Swartzkopf & Powell felt guilty @ the level of death & destruction we inflicted on the Iraqui troops. The video of the 'highway of death" horrible.

PBS has a great website & the director of the show last night will be available for an on line chat @ 11:00 East Coast time today

Long Road to War

I watched that, or something like it last week. It's too bad, he really started off as a decent guy, or so it seemed on the outside. They said he improved the infastructure in the country and elevated the status of women. Slowly things went downhill from there.

and again, the poor servers are getting hit pretty hard. don't even think about trying to watch any on-line movies.

Long Road to War

That was an incredible show. Anyone with an opinion towards this war should be made to watch it before saying a word.

After seeing it, my thoughts are:

Bush Jr. is now finishing the job the Bush Sr., Swartzkopf, Powell, and the Security Council failed to do.

Saddam won gulf war 1. We lost - in all the ways that mattered most.

Saddam is evil. Completely evil. His hero is Stalin and he rules as such.

Powell is a warrior who has never seen victory. My respect for him has dropped completely. It is because of "realiststs" like him that many innocent Iraquis were murdered in both the Shi'ite rebellion in the south and the Kurdish Exodus in the north. Same goes for Swartzkopf and Bush Sr. I would never vote for him to lead this country.

Liberal Anti-war protesters, like those who like to spout there opinions on ATOT, can all (pardon the french) FOAD. They said the exact same things before gulf war 1 and were the primary reason Clinton didn't take Saddam out when he could (SHOULD) have. Lazy intellectual idiots who have been taught to hate the US and accept evil. When those wankers got up and blasted Berger, Albright, and Cohen, it was clear how damaging these people are to our country. Saddam's own propaganda spouted out by people who they're their too smart to be Americans. If it is ever said we deserved 9/11, it is for the stance that these people took regarding Saddam.
That aspect of the show made my blood boil.

Clinton was a failure. He had an opportunity for greatness but instead will be remembered for Monica. That Saddam and Monica are linked will be a historical reality.

The multi-national coalition Bush Sr established and which Bush Jr is criticized for not embracing:
- was abandoned by Russia, China, and France, thereby making the Security Council useless. It is still useless.
- helped keep Saddam in power.
- abandoned arms inspections despite growing evidence of weapons of mass destruction.

I don't blame Bush Jr. one bit for not kissing the world's leaders' @ss this time around.

We are in a new era of history. We must take our responsibility as the most powerful country in history seriously. We are feared, but we were a joke after the first Gulf War. We must not fight half heartedly or accept limited victory ever again.

and finally,
God Bless George W. Bush, and God Bless America.

I nominate you for post of the day sir. 😀

/waiting for someone to come on here and deride it as US propaganda because PBS receives some financing from the government.

Good post stark. Now if we can just limit the "shock and awe" deaths of innocents I'll be 100% in agreement. We shall see.

I suggest you contact your local PBS station as to if they will re-air it or at least request that they do. If enough people do, they will of course. 🙂

Stark:
Saddam won gulf war 1. We lost - in all the ways that mattered most.
How so? We kicked him out of Kuwait. This was our stated objective. Bush Sr. and his advisors had level heads and thought it was best not to take out Saddam. Yes they knew he was a bad man but they weren't blinded by their hatred and irrational fear of Saddam.

Powell is a warrior who has never seen victory. My respect for him has dropped completely. It is because of "realiststs" like him that many innocent Iraquis were murdered in both the Shi'ite rebellion in the south and the Kurdish Exodus in the north. You sound like a Soviet dictator denouncing the Soviets regimes of the past. Yes, Powell is a realist, but the neocon Hawks are much purer realists than Powell. So if you're going to use a term you picked up by watching the show last night at least know what it is, who it applies to and lastly don't use it to slander someone when you don't have a good idea of the definition.

Liberal Anti-war protesters, like those who like to spout there opinions on ATOT, can all (pardon the french) FOAD. The anti-war movement now has much broader support than it did back then. Sure there was an anti-war movement in response to the war in Afghanistan, but does it have the same support here and abroad that the currect anti-war movement has??
Remember who opposed Berger, Albright and Cohen as well?? REPUBLICAN congressmen. You want me to find a nice Tom DeLay quote about how he felt about Clinton's plan for Saddam??
Once again, 9/11 and Saddam have nothing to do with each other.

Clinton was a failure. He had an opportunity for greatness but instead will be remembered for Monica. That Saddam and Monica are linked will be a historical reality.
How was Clinton a failure and how did he blow his opportunity for greatness?? At least back up some of your rhetoric with reasoning.

We are in a new era of history. We must take our responsibility as the most powerful country in history seriously.
You feel good about the idea of American Empire don't you?? The whole "war behind closed doors" segment about the Bush doctrine didn't set off any alarms for you, huh?

We are feared, but we were a joke after the first Gulf War.
Now who is the one spreading Anti-American sentiment here? America a joke?? You have to be a real fool to take that one.

God Bless George W. Bush, and God Bless America.
I don't think God is taking sides on this one.

it was a rerun. but a good one. i think its broadcast in hd🙂 pbs frontline is generally always good! hell they even had one onf the porn industry, that was interesting indeed🙂 u know the reporters were scrambling for that assignment😉

Didn't see it. Did it happen to mention France, Germany, and Russia's support of the Hussein regime? Or was it a typical 'expose' of American support of the Hussein regime, conveniently neglecting to mention the contributions made by those other countries?

I saw, for the first time on a major network news program, NBC News with Tom Brokaw no less, a news story about France's ties with Hussein and Iraq including France's economic interests. Wonders never cease.

However, unlike the 20 or 30 other news stories I've seen detailing American support of Hussein, which never uttered a single word about France, Germany, or Russia, they couldn't help but also mention some of the ways America supported Hussein, 'in the interests of fairness' no doubt.

Dubious double standards.

its concentration was probably on other areas from what i remember. its not all inclusive. this was nto the only frontline on iraq, there were several.

Why yes it did.
Look here
In this report, which originally aired Sept. 11, 1990, FRONTLINE examined how Saddam Hussein built Iraq's massive arsenal of tanks, planes, missiles, and chemical weapons during the 1980s. Correspondent Hodding Carter investigated the complicity of the U.S. and European governments, as well as Western corporations, in creating the Iraqi military machine the world was then trying to stop.

jdoveins 😛

every point i made was addressed in the show. Clinton WANTED to take out Hussein. He had to back down, in part because of the Monica scandal.

When we declared a cease fire, Saddam announced to his generals that they had won. Bush Sr. said that he felt no great sense of relief and joy like after WW2. Saddam stayed in power long after Bush Sr. had been voted out.

Schwarzkopf (sp?) is the General who negotiated the cease fire with the Iraqis..

He is the dolt who allowed them to fly armed helicopters over the shiite muslims, Kurds and other peoples in Iraq who were rebelling against the Iraqi regime. The Iraqis then used the helicopters to Slaughter ALL OF THEM with.

The most disgusting thing was that we (the US) encouraged the people to stand up and fight against Saddam... but then Shwarzkopf told the Iraqis to go ahead and fly armed military helicopters into the areas where the rebels were... My heart sank quite a bit when watching that. Schwarzkpf should be ashamed of himself..

its on again😛

the north korean bit running right now is a rerun, but amusing. communist lipstick wearing, jack booted chicks, just like in the movies! hehe🙂
