We would be much better off if the 50% skipping school actually attended. This just screams of future criminals and welfare dependence. Going to school isn't rocket science and even if they don't have the intelligence they can still learn productive life traits such as responsibility and ambition. These schools probably need more of a trade skill focus to encourage something other than a college path post high school. There should be some consequence to absence, maybe a boot camp style program to re-educate them to become productive and responsible. A little like rehabilitation(non-political).

I see no reason to believe this is true.

So basically you're saying they'd make good politicians then, right?

Going to school isn't rocket science and even if they don't have the intelligence they can still learn productive life traits such as responsibility and ambition.

Tell me, how can one learn responsibility and ambition from the kind of low-skill, low-pay parasites and leaches who teach inside government schools?

These schools probably need more of a trade skill focus to encourage something other than a college path post high school.

No, they just need to be shut down. The government has no business indoctrinating children, Goebbels.

There should be some consequence to absence, maybe a boot camp style program to re-educate them to become productive and responsible. A little like rehabilitation(non-political).

Yes, that sounds wonderful. Let's turn government schools into little high-security prisons. This is a brilliant idea. That way, we can teach our young at an early age how to be good inmates when they are adults in the future United Police States of Amerika.

I see no reason to believe this is true.
The opposite might be true. The people skipping class are probably meth heads. All they would do in school is distract the other students and piss off the teachers.

School should try to reduce attendance and make the club a bit more exclusive.
-retards are kicked out
-meth heads are kicked out
-trouble makers are kicked out
-people who don't do assignments are kicked out

And I could save $$$ on my kids private school...win.

Your list sounds like what public school was in the 70/80's when I was there.

My experience with subs is that they're just baby sitters, I don't think I've ever been in a class where the students took subs seriously. They either gave us busy work or told us to talk amongst ourselves.

Senior year of HS, I skipped every class period I ever had a sub in because there was no point in being there.

That was my experience as well with subs. We had a few though who either actually got a real assignment from the teacher and carried it out, and/or, were ex-teachers or whatever and we knew not to F with. Mostly though, it was at worst an easy day...

What's sad about this 14 year old is she not only is not learned, but she just doesn't care. She's at a brand new nice high school now that she's moved, getting her fresh start, and when I ask her what classes they've got her in now, she responds back after thinking about it, 'Uh, well....I've got gym...'. Bravo. Maybe just drop out at 16 and get started early on your baby, welfare, and gas station attendent career. It's sad watching someone so young make decisions unknowingly that are going to completely life F them for the next 60 years of their life. If our taxes didn't have to go to supporting their mistakes, it'd be easier to write them off...

correction: save money on public school taxes. Schools wouldn't need metal detectors or police because all of the meth heads would have no reason to be in the school ^_^.

There shouldn't be public shame associated with dropping out of school either. Who cares if you aren't a math person? Some people are good with their hands. I'm guessing the guys who did a good job of building my home don't know anything about calculus or russian literature.

Many students are simply uninspired. Either by their community or their school. Some of America's worst students probably could have been turned around at some point if someone just worked with them. 15% of my Graduating class did not Graduate back in 08. They didn't have enough credits, they couldn't pass the State exit exam, and they didn't have any aspirations.

I definitely couldn't say this happened because they were lazy, because I went to Elementary, Middle, and High School with nearly 80% of the people I graduated with. I knew these people.

After we hit HS, people changed. I don't know why, but some people just gave up...didn't do anything in school or didn't come. Something was going on.

Luckily for me, I always had someone around that cared what was going on in school. My mom would bug the shit out of me about what I was taking and what I wasn't. She came to Parent-Teacher conferences, PT Meetings, etc.

Somebody needs to be there for these kids. Someone needs to care.

Meh. i would rather kids that don't give a shit and don't want to learn not go.

One thing i hated when i was in high school. Far to many kids were there just because they had to be. so they would disrupt the class or cause problems in the school.

My graduating class was 66% the size of when we started as freshman. We had some attrition to moves, but, we also gained folks in during those 4 years too. For the most part, they were dropouts. Occassionally I'll see them on the train or around the area. They look about 15 years older than I do now, and that's saying something given my current state.

What changed is the games that were played in 1-5 were over, and especially over once high school started. That coupled with getting older and making their own decisions rather than blindly doing whatever an adult told them basically sinks many of these kids. They don't have the proper value system, nor the innate understanding of actions having consequences. They have no vision because they simply don't care. Many of your classmates did get lazy - they weren't that way before, but, they were then.

Luckily for me, I always had someone around that cared what was going on in school. My mom would bug the shit out of me about what I was taking and what I wasn't. She came to Parent-Teacher conferences, PT Meetings, etc.

And this is the key part. These kids are supposed to have parents (plural) that are a.) actually around and b.) actually taking the proper steps to ensure their kids educational development. In a frightening amount of cases, neither a nor b are met. When the parents aren't around to care, or, are aroud and still don't care, or, are around and are a negative, it's not helping the kid in any manner.

I don't know where these 14 year olds dad is, but the mom sure was quiet when I asked HowTF did the mom not know. The 14 year old said the school sends nothing home, which, given how bad the school is, I'd almost believe. But I'm sure the school does send quarterly grades out, and as a parent, the absolute minimum that one could do is look at that quarterly grade. I don't know...maybe she had acceptable grades and this all started within one quarter, who knows. But I get the feeling that this mom isn't doing a bang up job on the kid front.

I wish my bud wouldn't rush into sh1t like this, but, he is how he is. At least his kids he won't allow to be F'd up.

Sure, Waggy...but why not try and see why kids don't give a shit and don't want to go to school. Instead of letting kids fall by the wayside and then complain later when they shoot a baby between the eyes...why not try and turn it around right then and there?

There's a lot more going on than just not caring.

But the only way to do that at these problem schools is get the parent(s) to actually get their kid an instant understanding of proper values and attitude: An impossible task for a multitude of reasons. Then you've got the school admin and teachers, and especially, the teachers union, thrown into that. And then, on top of that, community Leadership.

The most effective thing we could possibly do is wall these areas off, appoint a dictator, and have that dictator administer birth control to every 13 year old and up until over 18 year olds could show they had a job that could support not only themselves, but a spouse and a kid (to cover spouses without a job) in a manner that would allow them to live outside this walled off compound.

Since that will not remotely happen, we are stuck with systemic F ups because each of the problem areas simply cannot be addressed. We instead have doomed to fail patch jobs that never will solve the problem, only at best treat small problems at high cost.

lol. People who suck at math turn into baby killers. I knew it!

Did any of you even bother to watch the episodes of the show?

In the first one, there was a girl that moved from NO, because of Katrina, to DC. She said how tough it was for her and her mom because her dad left the family, ie. dead beat dad. Yet, she still did not learn from own bitter experience and end up with a kid before she even finish HS, and of course, no husband. And she is not alone in that school district and there are many school districts just as bad, if not worse, around the US.

Who is going to be able to help her and young kids like her if she or they did not even bother to help herself/themselves? How much did we spend for all of the social programs such as "Great Society" since the 60s? Are we ,or the folks that we are supposed to help, are better now vs. in the 60s even with all the money spent?

"You can take a horse to water but you can not make it drinks" - old proverb.

"Charity begins at home" - as in relatives, not the guverment again.

At my H.S students who ditched were required to make up class on Saturday, students with excessive unexcused absences senior year were not allowed to participate in graduation. Attendance was taken in every class.

The school also notified parents of every unexcused absence.

I agree. My problem is that right now the kids that want to be there. that want to learn are screwed over more because t he idiots that don't care.

Changing the culture and how people view a education is a damn impossible task.

They don't care. That's the problem. Culture.

/this

what makes people think they will care about missing graduation? there needs to be a shift in Culture before anything can be really done.

so my issue shifts to those kids that want to learn.

NO, YOU.

What's up, Chuck?

The usual. What is it with teens today? I just can't get the 'have pants sag down to the ground thing'...is the excuse still that their junk is so massive, it won't fit comfortably in normal jeans? The local hs got out today and I happened to be going past...Fing ridiculous...

While I was being sarcastic, if you actually suggested this, you indeed would be called a racist. Which is why it's never suggested.
