Okay..

If you sell something with paypal, and that person denies the charge on their credit card, what happens?

I sold something and the person is trying to back out. I am worried about getting ripped off, and am considering canceling my paypal account to avoid it (and creating another one or something..)

Did you ship to a confirmed address? Why is he backing out? Do you still have money in your paypal? Go ahead and withdraw the money.

most of the time the buyer is "right" with or without your receipt that proves shipping

paypal will return the whole ammount to buyer +$10 for them for so called "returned money charges"

What nonsense. If you ship to a confirmed address, then you will not incur a chargeback, that is what paypal's policy is all about. And in the event of a chargeback due to shipping to a non-confirmed address, that $10 service charge goes to paypal, not the buyer.

Someone on ATOT suggested getting a Paypal debit card. You can withdraw cash from any atm for a dollar charge.

If someone does a chargeback with their CC, you the seller is SOL. Even if you follow paypal's seller protection policy to the T, you will not win. In the case of a chargeback, Paypal will go after your account and banking account and take the money from you. To add insult, they will charge you a $10 fee. That is why, I feel strongly that paypal sucks for not telling you in the transaction whether the buyer used a credit card or simply moved money around. If they ever did, sellers will probably be VERY surprised to see the % of the transactions are just moving money from one account to another with paypal getting a piece each time.

Edit: Yes, you gave paypal permission to go into your bank account when you linked it and agreed to their ever-changing policy agreement. You can try and tell your bank no outside debits to paypal or you can open up a checking account at another bank and link that one.

They will take out from the bank account without the Sellers permission? Isn't there something the seller can do? like ask the bank to stop any unauthorized debits?

Paypal :)

I choose this $hitty method of payment because most of the buyers are honest. In 300 transactions I had only 5 or 6 gone sour.Is a risk I'm willing to take paypal being a fast method of payment.

just don't link your main checking acc to paypal

Paypal sucks. EBAY sucks too because they own Paypal now.

The buyer did a $320 chargeback on my credit card and now I'm out the money and a Radeon 9700 Pro.

Turns out the buyer actually stole somebody elses card number, and when that person found out, they wanted their money back. Not their fault - but I get screwed.

Paypal and Ebay proved their true colors when they did nothing for me. As far as I'm concerned Paypal is responsible for verifying the credit card transactions that go through their system, and THEY should have taken the hit on this one. To hell with their "policy" - it means nothing. It would have taken too much time and money to go after then with lawyers too. Wouldn't have been worth it.

I even had the police involved and went after this guy - but of course he's disappeared now.

I will continue to motherfvck Paypal and EBAY until the day I die.

Do yourself a huge favor:

1) Contact your bank immediately and ask them to open a NEW checking account and use it only for Paypal payments separating it from your regular checking account.

2) Read and follow Paypal's seller's protection policy. I ALWAYS ship only to VERIFIED Paypal member's with a CONFIRMED shipping address with DELIVERY CONFIRMATION.

3) Send an e-mail to damon@paypal.com who is a helpful Paypal employee who frequents the AT forums, he can help you out. The sooner you contact him, the better.

A freind of mine had the same problem. This is what he did.

He called them up. He used tracking and had the results of the auction and a e-mail from the person saying what their address is etc...
He faxed it to them and they gave him his money back and told the other person to F-O.

As long as you keep records of everything, and shipped to a confirmed address, you should be OK>

But this is one of many reasons I don't take CC's

Hi chowderhead,

Sellers can be protected from charge backs if they follow Seller Protection to a "t". However, merchandise quality charge backs are not covered under the program.

While I realize the concerns charge backs draw on the boards, I do need to advise that they are actually quite rare.

The information surrounding Seller Protection can be found in our User Agreement.

funny thing is one of the charge back was for only $8
but paypal charged me $10 for their so called "service charge"
why did they charge me? god knows
i didn't complain to anyone nor i e-mailed paypal to investigate it but they still carged me

they can easy check any cc by checking the security code on the cc which is 4 numbers and is located on the back(visa,mc ) or front (amex) of the card
but they do prefer to rip of honest ppl and chargem them and over charge them

:disgust:

Can I ask what the details of the cancellation are? I'm always scared when I read these, but assume that something fishy went on to make the situation more succeptable to a problem.

even if you close your acc and someone you've dealt before wants their money back Paypal can/will try to deduct from your bank acc

safest way for you---- close that bank acc which is linked to paypal
