So I got paypal involved, first using the dispute option so I could continue communicating with the seller. The seller eventually answered, advising me to ship everything back to them for a full refund. By this time I had used the drivers , tweeters, and terminal cups from the speakers in another project. I responded with this info, and asked for a refund of $80, and we could pretend I had paid around $40 shipped for some speaker components. They never answered that, so I escalated the dispute into a claim.

I summed everything up for paypal, and was confident they would grant me my partial refund, given that all the facts were on my side. They responded saying the seller agreed to a full refund and I needed to provide tracking numbers when I sent the item back.

I stopped reading after this. Unless the rest of your story involves you sending everything back, yet still not getting a refund, you were at fault. You can keep your goods, or you can everything back for a full refund. What you can't do is keep them and then try to dictate how much money you want.

In other words, the seller offered a full refund, yet you refused and even tried to make up your own partial refund / return policy for them? Of course Paypal won't acknowledge your whining. Ship the product as they said for your refund or keep the broken speakers. There is no grey area here.

I've used them since they opened up and never had a problem. I've put thousands of dollars through them and had to file a few disputes, all of which have been rectified satisfactorily.

And I was one of the earliest members as well. Safe to say AT put them on the map, long before ebay got involved. That you've never had any problems doesn't mean others haven't. Just look at all the stories on paypalsucks.com.

Paypal is doing anything wrong dude...you screwed the pooch by using the speakers that were delivered to you.

Paypal isn't going to work with you on getting a PARTIAL refund on what YOU determine is fair...if you want a partial refund you need to take it up with the seller.

Sorry dude...but this is on you, not paypal.

The posters on this thread are kind of harsh in their criticism of you, but they are mostly correct.

Yes, Paypal was not helpful to you and, yes, the seller was being unresponsive, but when dealing with large companies (like the seller), ignoring you is easier and less costly than dealing with your unique arrangements.

Best bet if you had received a damaged box when you got home would have been to call UPS/Fedex and informed that you were denying this shipment. They would have been out there the next day to pick it up. You should have then contacted the seller and informed them of this.

Having opened the box and fooled around with the items, it is hard to make a strong case on your end. However, you may be able to approach the angle that they shipped you only 1/2 of what you were due.

If you paid using a CC, then take it up with them and you may get some resolution. Otherwise, you are going to be $135 poorer and will have learned a costly lesson.

BTW, having a low 90's feedback on 10,000+ transactions means that they have screwed over thousands of people before you, so that should have ringed some bells in your head.

Take Care,

Pradeep

Are you crazy? Do you know how many transactions go through paypal in a day?

This company offered you ALL of your money back, and you told them no. Then, paypal looks at the claim, sees that you want to do some ridiculous haggling, and says "F U".

instead of checking out paypalsucks.com first you should have read the Idiot's Guide to Paypal transactions.

You are an idiot. Try that crap with a B&M store and they will tell you to go pound sand.

I'm getting sick and tired of all the incompetent schmucks who fail to follow common sense and do their due diligence, then come here and whine how much PayPal/eBay/UPS/FedEx/USPS sucks

Stay out of the thread then. Or suggest what "common sense" action I could have taken.

By the way, they said they would only refund me the $20 that I paid for shipping. Since their box arrived completely shredded, I'd have to go out and purchase all new shipping materials. Due to the size and weight of the speakers, fedex, ups, usps all estimated ~#35 shipping. So I would end up spending $20 for their mistake, which is about $20 of the value of the auction. That seems reasonable.

take that up with the shipping company then. its not teh dealers responbilty.

they did the correct thing. they offered you a full refund. you didn't want that. shrug. i really fail to see how this is paypal's incompetence and not yours.

Yup .... You totally blew it by not immediately taking them up on the refund... if I were you I'd take the drivers out of whatever you "used" them in & send them back asap if its still an option.

It seems reasonable to you, but no one agreed to it. They did agree to a full refund if you would ship it back, which you say would cost you $20. That should have allowed the $125 refund to go thru. It's not a perfect arrangement, but reasonable. You'd have been out $20.

As it is you got some components for $125. It seems the other deal would have been better, but it's off the table now.

I can understand that you feel screwed. You were ... but you helped. I don't think thier offer was wrong, and I understand why thier only refund policy is "send it back".

I make use of some parts from the 2 speakers, ask for partial refund
There's the problem right there. The seller said you could ship it all back and they would give you a refund. Instead you tried making up your own policy, and of course paypal said no. This has nothing to do with paypal and evverything to do with you not having a clue.
