Mikey,

He is not buying a new product. He is buying used and I clearly listed what was included in the auction. He has to share some of the blame since he made assumptions and never asked any questions.

No he doesn't have to share the blame. I'd put money on it if you made a poll asking if laptops come with a battery, at least 99 out of 100 people would assume a laptop comes with a battery, used or not.

OK - so it seems I am the only one who sees it my way. This tells me that I am wrong and I need to rectify the situation.

Not quite like that since a car won't run without an engine, but a laptop runs fine with no battery.

Kudos to you for recognizing it, admitting it, and doing something about it.

Lots of folks these days seem to just keep right on with the same wrong view even when they know they're wrong.

no, if you weren't including a BATTERY, you should have explicitly stated so. You stated the item was "immaculate", that implies it is complete and clean.

You screwed up by not disclosing there was no battery.
You screwed up by selling a laptop without using buy it now with immediate payment required.
You screwed up by accepting a payment from someone with an unconfirmed address.
You screwed up by shipping to the unconfirmed address.

Yes, you're screwed.

You had better hope the buyer doesn't send an empty box with a tracking number to prove to PayPal he returned the item. Be glad it was on a $180 PIII and not a $2,000 C2D.

I could make so much money scamming naive sellers on eBay if I had no scruples...

Refund..

You pay for shipping..

Tell the buyer that you are sorry for not telling the buyer that the battery is not included.

You have two options: a) Offer to buy him a battery b) Tell him to ship laptop back to you and refund him. FYI: PayPal will not refund him until the laptop has been delivered back to you.

Unless you specifically said it did not come with a battery then I would think he is in the clear here.

Dude, totally uncalled for. If Garet was scamming anyone do you think he'd have bothered posting this thread? Jeebus...

Your auction clearly says "I will only ship to confirmed PayPal addresses ? please do not even ask for exceptions." and yet you shipped to an unconfirmed address.

Why would you ship it without a battery? Without it, it is DOA and you did give a guarantee. Ask him if he'll except if you buy a battery and ship it to him for free.

Totally called for. This is akin to selling a new xbox box, and just sending the box. The pictures taken of the bottom of the laptop are taken to not show the missing battery. The seller did everything he could to not disclose the lack of a battery. The auction states windows installed, bios updated, etc giving the impression that the laptop is actually in a running state. They don't run without batteries, and it seems obvious to me that he intended to decieve.

Its not like the battery is a seprate unit that plugs into the laptop. That batteries on most modern laptops are part of the whole device. How may laptops for sale are not bettery powered? I can't blame the guy for his reaction. Sure it was over the top and he should have contacted you... but if I had a bad day... I would have done the same thing.

And as a reminder... no confrmed address = no seller protections (well the little protections that exist anyway).

Waggy and Turin you guys have no instinct for human nature. If I intended to deceive than why would I post about it here and then admit fault?

I I was trully trying to decieve then I would have told him to go stuff it and you guys would never have heard about it.

You two guys are being way too harsh - but that's OK everyone makes mistakes - only some of us are confident enough to admit to them.

I made a simple mistake, admitted to it and am trying to rectify it.

I know - my wife and I are moving homes in two days and are very busy packing things for the movers coming tomorrow.

This was the third buyer who bought the laptop and the third one with an unconfirmed address. Each time it takes at least 16 days to be able to relist it since you have to jump through ebay hoops to get the FVF back.

I started trying to sell this laptop in late January and I didn't want to move it to the new house because there is going to be too much to do already.

I was very frustrated and exchanged many emails with this buyer prior to actually selling it. I just wanted to be done with it.

Lesson learned - it is good that it will probably only cost me a couple hundred bucks.

Uh, no. Not even remotely akin to that lame analogy. 0 points.

My Dell C840 laptop runs fine on AC without a battery installed. Again, 0 points.
