I agree with the pay per job, not hour.

I wouldn't get involved with this though. If the quality sucks or he takes too long... it will impact your friendship.
Plus, just him working for YOU changes things. YOu are no longer equals... he is BELOW you.
It will be awkward.

Yeah, I think I'll go with your suggestions and just pay him for the job. I'm thinking $50 to fix the fence and seal it. Basically, this is just to screw the fence posts because some of them are popping up. My fence is an L-shape setup and my land is less than 0.3 acres. I already have a sprayer for the wood seal. For the deck, I'm thinking maybe $30 to wash it clean and then seal it. I also want to add some brick or paver borders to some areas of my yard. It'll be a lot of heavy lifting I assume so maybe $50 for about 5 sections of the yard.

Typically $15/hr is the going rate because it isn't a consisitant 40 hour week. $10/hr or less is a slap in the face for someone already down on their luck. There is a stipulation though...they must have the skills to do quality work in a given amount of time.

But that's just me...

Hah. I took your suggestion and ask for an estimate for the entire work. My friend countered with a $15/hr rate. I figured that was reasonable. I'd rather spend the money that I was saving for some home renovation / cleaning up on him rather than a contractor. He's done a pretty good job so far. Although, he's slowly approaching my limit, so I may have to cut him off soon.

I'm sorry, but hiring friends suck. It is a recipe for trouble. I had this contracting job that needed to be done. My friend was the lowest bidder because he gave me a discount. I ended up not going with him because if anything went wrong, it would just be awkward if something went wrong.

It was pretty clear from the beginning that this wasn't about helping an unemployed friend but about saving money on some home improvement projects.

$1 under the table is worth about $1.25 on the book pay, unless he's reporting his income like he's supposed to be.

You can look at it that way, but the work that he's done is basic stuff. My grandmother could have done it if she still had legs. I could have done it, as well, but if I did, then the time factor would have taken weeks. He's actually finished with his work.

Since I also had windows done, that work actually went to a licensed contractor. My friend could have done it, too, but windows and basic clean up stuff are different in my book.
