paycheck came up short.... way way short

i got jipped on 8 hours of overtime once and the controller told me to wait until the next paycheck (right before christmas)

5 minutes of angry troytime and he cut me a check on the spot.
the trick was comparing his luxorious lifestyle with my grossly underpaid and overworked employment position

My payday was today. 4 weeks ago this happened to me (the boss missed picking up my time card). So, 2 weeks ago I got two paychecks.

I didn't make a fuss about it because I didn't need the money at the time and was going to end up spending it along with my next paycheck on speakers anyway.

Good luck with your situation.

Enjoy paying the interest now instead of receiving all your money. Think about it this way...you just loaned the government some money interest free.

Agreed ... talk to HR. Or your states Labor board.

how many of you would be put underwater by something like this? I'm glad I have savings to fall back on :(

That's not legal. You have every right to walk into HR and demand a corrected check before going to the authorities.

Stand up for yourself.

I worked for a university for many years. Payments were monthly. And messed up checks were more common than correct checks. I'd frequently have to wait until the next pay period (2 months) to get my money. Then, since the check is bigger, their accountants have to withhold more tax. Sure you get it back, but it is just another stab in the back. They'd definately cut you an extra check if you asked and waited the 30 days to get all the required signatures, so I usually didn't bother.

Conclusion: you better have 2 months salary in the bank. If you don't you are asking for trouble. But two months salary saved is common sense anyways.

ADP? I wonder if it's the same ADP on the floor below me, want I should go down and shake up some people for you? ;)

Even if it's not state law, it's the "right" thing to do.

Tell your manager you'll be coming over for dinner every night for the next 2 weeks so he/she can make it up to you.

In many states you are correct, but others don't have any laws. Either way, payroll should be able to cut you a manual check.

Edit: I just want to emphasize that this is state by state, not regulated federally (to most extent). California requires 24 hour turn around, but Texas does not. Depending on PAs laws your company can have some leeway. Still doesn't make it right, though.

We use ADP as well, and they forgot to print my check entirely one week. I had it in my hands the next day.

2 weeks is unacceptable.

i used to live paycheck to paycheck student style... count my chickens before they hatched... i expected a DD every other friday, was consistent for 4 months. So one month i have to cut some checks for bills that are about to be overdue... no biggie, write them thursday, DD goes in early friday morning... cept on friday no DD, CRAP. Payroll didn't put my timesheet in on time, so i was going to get a paper check the following week... needless to say, NSF NSF NSF NSF OVERDRAWN ACCT FEES... paycheck was eaten up. took me 3 months to get payroll to own up, 3 months of playing catch up... never never never again will i spend before the money is clearly in my acct, but Fvck payroll and mistakes.

you know you're gonna get tagged extra on taxes when they combine your two paychecks right? I forgot to fill out my time card here @ work once week and did it the following week so I had 2 paychecks in one. ended up losing over $100 because I got taxed at a higher percentage. I'll get it back during tax returns, but it still sucks

Same thing happened to me when my company fired my contract agency and passed me off to a new one. To get us off the books quick, the old company paid all the money they owned us at once, a months worth. Taxes were ridiculous because a check that was supposed to be for a two-week period was actually for a four weeke period, so it looked like I made double what I did. I lost $200 out of that deal.

I work for ADP and can tell you that the office below you most likely has nothing to do with his payroll. We have offices in every single state and a few other contries as well. We have 5 divisions that work in completely different industries. Besides that it wasn't a mistake of ADPs it was his bosses fault.

If you too are that hard up for money, just adjust your withholdings for the rest of the year to take out less money each month. Then you'll get it back check by check instead of waiting until tax time next year.

They are obligated. It was their fsck-up. BUT, they don't have to. ADP will cut them an off-cycle check out of payroll for a clerical error.

Jeez... if you worked private sector, you'd scarcely have to ask. You'd only have to point out the mistake and the corrected check would be in their trembling hands the next day to give to you (trembling for fear you'd go to Labor and complain). I guess only government can be so grossly out-of-compliance and get away with it.

edit: To explain the compliance issue in this case, it's not that his check was wrong, it's the tiny amount he received. That means he was most likely paid WELL under minimum wage for his previous pay period. That's federal, baby.
