Since I am not sure which of those sections refer to the no postage needed items you return I will not argue. Even if you are right and you did send a bunch of engine blocks back that the company had to cover the cost of do you really think they will not adjust their prices of their products to make up that difference? So with that action you are now making the customer pay more for a product. Also when people do it to a company you do business with you pay for their stupidity. The business will never pay for it the consumer will.

<< The Post Office doesn't care if you send out 1000 engine blocks or 1000 credit card applications, they charge you the same because it is the same "certain amount". >>

I was refering to the fact that if they sent out return envelopes for 1000 credit card applications they would pay a set amount and if they sent out return envelopes for 1000 engine blocks they would pay a set amount. The agreed price would be based on what is supposed to be returned in those envelopes.

I never advocated the engine block thing, it was invented by Abbie Hoffman as a form of civil disobedience. I don't condone or condemn it.

He also went into companies he didn't like with an electrical cord with a plug on one end and loose wires on the other; he would plug one end into the wall, and the loose end he would stick into the company's telephone jacks (this was before modular jacks, I expect, or he wouldn't need loose wires at the end). He would do this while he was in the waiting room, most often.

And no, metered mail is weighed by the post office if it is over 1 oz. And no, the credit card companies (or whatever) don't pay for every envelope they send out, they pay for every envelope that is returned.

NO. They send out 1000 prepaid envelopes and pay (reduced) postage on the envelopes that are actually returned. The amount that they pay depends on the wieght of the items returned.

hmm... I did not start this thread to cause a lot of arguements.

Though after reading the responses what it makes me think is that this is simular to the actions of Abbie Hoffman, in that it is indead a means of civil disobedience towards those credit card companies and others sending out all this crap mail. There is no reason to waste natural resources, and push products upon people that they never had any interest of in the first place.

This is a chance to show them that we don't want this to continue.

Taping it to a brick/engine block, etc will no longer work. If you don't believe me, go visit your post office. They have posted that they will no longer ship packages or anything over 1 (or is it 2) pounds left in a drop box. This is to prevent bombs/etc from getting through the mail (as one could deposit it with the required postage and be untracable). Maybe it said packages w/o correct postage and didn't specify a poundage. I don't remember for sure, I read it once, filed it mentally, and stopped reading it again :D

I cant find reference to this new law on USPS's web site, I know my local PO has it posted on a placard above the drop box.

ok, could you just white out the name of the company on those return envelopes, and then use the envelopes that are like prepaid to mail letters and stuff to friends? Just put their name in place of Citibank, or whoever?

AaronP, I think there's a fine for that, could be wrong. It might even say on the little stamp thingy. I don't have one handy
