This deal looked really good till I saw the fine print about needing to "top off" your minutes every 90 days. BS!

Topping this phone does not mean filling it to the brim. It means a minimum of $20.00 every 3 months (about $6.70 a month). And these minutes never expire.

On the deal you were talking about---->1unit=1min; and the cards cost is 150 unit card for $94.99 or a 300 unit card for $149. That is .63cents per min or .47cents per min. + a monthly $8.00 fee. And do these minutes expire?

Honestly ExplodingBoy, I don't see that as a very good deal.

TechnoGeek: It depends upon what you want. If you want the best per-minute price and plan on regular use then the tracphone deal sux. If you just want a phone to keep in the car for emergencies, having to top it off every few months is a hassle. For that type of use tracphone is better because you only buy a new card once a year.

eh i love my tracfone...the only thing is no sending SMS from the phone...but other than that its a great service on some pretty decent networks in my state (AZ) at least 😀

I think coverage is where Tracfone shines brighter than the other prepaid services. They contract with several providers so just because (say) Sprint doesn't cover your area doesn't automatically leave you without service. They've even got some analog coverage when you head out into the boonies. 🙂

But yeah, if you talk more frequently or want the advanced features like SMS, the other plans cost less in the long run and would be a better choice. On occasion, you might be able to catch a Tracfone special that's a pretty good value, e.g. digital phone & 1-year service for $60 (this was a hot deals post around last Christmas).

My family has 2 of the Virgin Mobil Party phones. They work well and are the cheapest around. I seldom use mine but my daughter uses it a lot. She only has needed to top off a couple times since we activated the phone last Christmas. I have had to had time 2 times and have over 20 dollars on my phone. Only disadvatage is the coverage area but they are great if you are going to be a metropolitian area. If you travell out in the hinderlands frequently I would get a Verizon phone.
