Pay $999, never pay another phone bill in your life

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - For customers who either love to plan ahead or hate monthly bills, a small Massachusetts telecommunications firm has launched a $999 offer of unlimited Internet-based telephone service for life.

RNK Telecom said on Monday its "Phone for Life" deal would be offered through resellers in Massachusetts, New York, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. The deal includes unlimited calls within the United States, Canada and 20 countries, as well as an additional 21 foreign cities.

Privately held RNK said the deal includes a two-month money-back guarantee, and that customers still unhappy after five years could get half their money back minus charges for some calls. The $999 fee does not include taxes or surcharges.

Internet calling services use voice over Internet Protocol, or VOIP, to transmit phone calls in the same way data is sent over the Internet. That technology makes calls less expensive than traditional phone services, which require a dedicated circuit for each connection.

Prices for VOIP service have been falling in recent months as new competitors flood the market. The largest U.S. VOIP company, Vonage, offers unlimited calling for $25 per month. Another VOIP start-up, SunRocket, is offering one year of unlimited calls for $199, or about $17 per month.

Fees for residential VOIP services do not include the cost of the required high-speed Internet connection.

if you're a nut with the home phone / cell phone, this could pay for itself in just 2-3 years. Too bad nobody knows what will happen with anything in that time.

Considering I pay $25 a month, 40 years is a long ass time to break even!

EDIT: Guess I should correct this since people can't read 🙂

40 months, not 40 years 😀

you are teh pwned? 🙂

My family pays something near 190 for cell phones right now, and another 25 for local land line, this would literally pay off in 6 months... if we trusted/used that technology 😛

This is a land line only thing. So it certainly won't offset your cell phone bill. Then add in the monthly fee for high speed internet. I gotta think you have to be able to find something cheaper than $190 a month though for cell phones.

What I'm curious about though is the multiple taxes and fees that will be required. Are you still going to be paying $10 a month for those? Makes the math different. Also it make the thread title "never pay another phone bill" or the article text "hate monthly bills" inaccurate.

Since Verizon requires phone service w/ DSL, it won't apply to me. I barely use the home land-line phone anyways. If only they could compete with Verizon for my cell phone service. I'd like $999 one time fee for my cell phone service.

I'm also curious about the other non-phone related bills that they'll make you pay for..
