I believe that it's the way the ACA/Obamacare rollout is phased; the Medicare cuts/changes don't go into effect until 2013-14 (eg: conveniently after the 2012 elections)

Its inline with all the other changes that were given time to be planned for and put into effect.

Same with the pre-existing conditions ban, lifetime limits ban, setup of the state ins exchanges and implementation of all the new regs that had to be written and submitted for public comment.

If it was just electioneering strategery, he would have put a lot of bennies upfront too. This was a common complaint on the left.

I think it's less stupidity and more a tactical decision; older people have the perception that they paid into Medicare and are therefore entitled to it.

Older people conveniently do have this rationale.

They've paid into it for X many years, meanwhile also voting themselves tax cuts and expanded benefit programs (ie Part D) meanwhile just running up the debt for the last 30 years.

Now they are retired, kids are unemployed, under-insured and left with all their mountain of debt to pay back, and these selfless babyboomers are telling them to "get f'ked, we're not cutting our bennies but we're sure as hell going to cut yours. And while we're are at it, we'll vote ourselves another capital gains tax cut for our retirement accts and "pay" for it by cutting the mortgage interest deduction on the overvalued houses we've left you."

Me generation at its finest.

Yes, that is correct. Besides, if you are younger than 55 and you like your planned coverage under Medicare as it is now, then you can keep it.

I understand that for most Liberals/Democrats a choice is a difficult thing to comprehend.

So then you are saying there is no R&R plan, as no one in hell would choose to receive a below market value voucher to a private health ins company when Medicare already pays for everything?

There you go again. Of course his mother is not going on his plan, she is over 55 years old. That is part of the plan. Besides, you should be studying the Romney Plan, not the Ryan Plan.

Now go ask Bobo, the Post Turtle, and the Congressional members of the Democrat Party if their families are going on BoboCare.

OK, I'll bite> Ryan's voucher plan for Medicare exempts current recipients and everyone over age 55, ie, the plan does not take effect for TEN YEARS. In there any reason at all for this proposed plan not to take effect for a decade other than to buy off the votes of current seniors? Sounds like a horribly cynical plan to gut Medicare to me, telling current beneficiaries just go along and keep quiet and you won't be hurt.

If you can explain a bona fide, nonpolitical reason for the decade long delay, chime right inl

I would expect it will take at least that long to re-vitalize the health care insurance industry. Not to mention tort reform and at least a good faith effort to encourage more doctors and health care professional to be trained.

Besides that if you are 39 years old and do not wish to participate in the voucher plan, you don't have to. I know for a Liberal this is hard to believe but it is voluntary.
