Paratus, sorry, but I can't see defending a cpu that runs MUCH hotter, slower, and cost the same or more (775 socket) than the compeditor ! (Athlon64/Opteron) I only have an opinion against stupidity !!!!

Edit: And what, you don't trust Anand to give you accurate temperature info ? If so, find another forum (don't bite the hand the feeds you)

That link is BS. Of course Prescot owners are going to be positive. I only trust a reliable review site.... Like Anandtech.

P4's use more power than A64's?

Gee, I didn't know that! I'm glad those total system power graphs let us know that, otherwise we'd be wondering why P4's are hotter than A64's.

But not too much hotter Link!

Thats cause they throttle when they get too hot equal less performance.

The 3.6 presshot uses 150W under ful bore accroding to intels own specs !!! (not TDP which is really BSP)

Whats with all the hating?

Regardless of what you might think and what's been reviewed the Prescott in real life conditions is just not that hot.

I've yet to see mine over 60C

I'm not sure why this bothers you guys so much?

That;s cause you have a 2 KG HEAT SINK and mobos lie anyway.

I don't hate. Just tring to speak/seek real numbers since intel lies behind thier false TDP which every reviewer says is BS. I like intels new dothan. I even praise it over in GH. It does everything I like about AMD processors (except price which is a signifigant hurdle right now).

Anyway. I'm not fan boy either way ... Price/performance is my matix all things being equal.

What I was trying to do by starting that thread was to get real life Anandtech users to provide there temp ranges to help cut down on the "I just built my computer is it supposed to be this hot" threads. I think an Anandtech member with 3000+ posts can understand that users posting their real life experience with the hardware can help fill out even Anands wonderfully complete reviews ;). Plus my everyday usage trumps any review.

The only folks who call others liars about their systems are fanboys. Judging from most of your post you're not a fanboy just an AMD supporter so I'll chalk up your comments on the "BS link" and "not trusting Anands reviews" up to an abberation.

When I got mine I was ready to accept idle temps in the 60s and max temps close to 80 due to all the FUD being tossed around about how hot they run. I was pleasantly suprised to find it in the low 40s and it never gets to 60C under load. Even if my board is under reporting by 10C I'm still cooler than I thought I would be.

As to slower you know as well as I do that what the user is doing with the machine determines what he gets. If I was heavy into gaming or needed 64 bit I would have gone AMD. In everything else they are closely matched.

I'm not going to disagree that in most cases the A64 is the better buy and performer. (and cooler too! ;) )
But saying that using a P4 Prescott is stupid is just assinine. If I couldn't encode video, surf, use office, or even game it would have been stupid purchase but it does all that just fine.

Personally I think your just jealous that I got a dual cpu setup for so cheap compared to your dual opterons. Lets face it the Prescott has enough cache, pipes and heat for 2 chips! ;) j/k

Glad to here your not a fan boy

And as you're well aware its not a 2kg heat sink. It was a decent size and had a copper core. Plus if you want real temperatures look at the link I provided -- unless you also think those 45 Anandtech Prescott owners exagerated their temps.

PS. I do like AMD we maybe replacing our aging Dec Alphas at work with Opterons - which I'm looking forward too.
