I was under the impression upstate NY was suffering economically.

If we get rid of our fearless leaders and their asinine programs and plans, I think we'd be in good shape. The stupid stuff these guys come up with is incredible.

Western NY isn't too bad off for employment, and properties are very reasonable. If it weren't for having the highest taxes in the nation, we'd be growing.

Gotcha. I remember a few articles at RIT about upstate NY being in trouble, but yeah, the government of the state would really fuck that up.

A lot of people do want to see NY split in two. It won't happen, though. I have no idea if it would be good for it or not.

Thats why republicans are going to win in a landslide come November. Cut government spending and taxes, or get the hell out.

And the Republicans won't deliver on that, and they'll go out after a cycle or two, and everything repeats, as long as people keep electing the same two parties.

Republicans are only going to lay off people but they will still keep handing out millions of money to their Republican buddies to rip off the state. Its unfortunate the suckers on this board believe its a positive to cut an employee making $50k and keep a vender who does the same work and charges $120k.

NYS is a clusterfuck regardless of whatever moronic party is in power. They both can't get shit down and they both ratchet up the budget on their own pet projects.

It's a natural consequence of a two party system. If someone wants the Dems out (or vice versa) they pick the alternative who has the best chance. They know that if they pick a third party candidate, it virtually guarantees the side you do not want gets in.

What's the practical alternative?

The unions are too powerful. No one wants to anger them. If you cut union jobs, they'll be out to get you. Look at the sorry state of the MTA. People complain and ask why we're always paying more and more to ride the subway. Well, if you look at union salaries, they've been steadily going up. If you pay the workers more, you need too raise prices or cut services.

WNY is doing pretty well. Unemployment is around 8% in Rochester, and housing prices never having really been hurt that badly. Mainly because they started retooling their economies a few years back. Yahoo had an article up not long ago listing it as one of the most recession proof cities.

I don't really blame Patterson for this mess. When it comes to state politics, Hayabusa and myself are pretty close. I'll need to pay more attention to our next local elections.

THey've not gone down much because they never went up. They never went up because when people are paying 3-4% of their home's value every year in property taxes they cannot afford to pay much in principal. It's a wash, though, as long as you intend to stick around, but don't expect to get much equity in your house...

It doesn't matter for the election if they don't deliver it. They will get elected, then they won't deliver, then the dems will win, rinse repeat.

Paterson isn't directly responsible for the problem. Economics did that for him. Our state hasn't ever what one could consider prudent with finances, and has tended to spend 15 cents for every dime it finds. Well when the economy was booming and revenues were up, that was fine, but what happens when the bills come due, and the paycheck doesn't meet them anymore? This.

My complaint with Paterson is that he talks a lot about fixing things, but is apparently going to rely on the very thing that lost us our revenue base to begin with, and that's driving taxes and fees even higher.

It's had to believe what anyone says in Albany.

My dad made about a $40,000 profit on the house he bought 4 years ago outside Niagara Falls. Anecdotal evidence for sure, but there are benefits to not having participated in this bubble.

You can keep Albany, its a worthless money drain. If NYC is the 51st state, the state budget would look horrible while NYC will be fiscally sound.

NYC? You mean the bailout capital of the US? Home to corrupt street, AIG, billion dollar public subsidized ballparks, $1900/month one bedroom rentals NYC? Ah that one...

Let's see, you pay more taxes because you have more people then upstate? Or maybe you pay more taxes because the same stuff costs 4-5x more in NYC then upstate? Or maybe all your wealthy execs live in every other surrounding state other then NYS thus paying no taxes to you?

We'll take Albany back, but along with it goes all the agriculture, state parks and cheap living you'll now have to pay a premium for as tourist :p

" legalize ultimate fighting, allow the sale of wine in grocery stores, tax cigarette sales on Indian reservations and deploy speed-enforcement cameras in highway work zones. "

So how is this going to effect you? I know I'd rather keep people employed if all we are talking about is ultimate fighting and allowing grocery stores to sell wine. What does it matter if they are union workers or not? Sounds like you have a crummy job and you're jealous of people making a living wage.

it's not "ultimate fighting" it's mma god fucking damnit GOD FUCKING DAMNIT! obviously those all sound like good things... but the teachers union is really a plague on NY.

Lol you're an idiot. NYC pays more in taxes to the state and gets less back from the state. I'm not saying NYC pays more taxes than other cities. I'm saying we get less back from the state than we give.

That is why the lions share of taxes should go directly to the state government and not to the federal government which hands it back to the state government as political favors.
