ALBANY — Gov. David A. Paterson proposed what would be the largest cut to school aid in more than two decades and nearly $1 billion in new or increased taxes and fees as he unveiled his budget on Tuesday, a plan that is sure to touch off fierce opposition in the Legislature.

But New York is avoiding harsher medicine. Mr. Paterson has made no significant cuts to the state’s workforce and even made assurances to union leaders that he would not seek layoffs this year, a risky move as the state faces huge deficits in the coming years.

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/20/nyregion/20budget.html?ref=nyregion

This is just another example of how Unions plague the every day US citizen. New York state has the highest per capital spending on education. Guess where a big part of that spending goes towards? Yes, union salaries. Rather than do the sensible thing by cutting the overbloated union workforce, he decides to seek more taxes.

Who is going to pay? All the millionaires are leaving New York.

Sounds like Tennessee. The Gov. has increased the states budget at twice the rate of inflation. Now that tax revenues are down... we starting to get in deep doody. Luckily the state employees are not unionized so at least we are looking at some layoffs of state workers.

" legalize ultimate fighting, allow the sale of wine in grocery stores, tax cigarette sales on Indian reservations and deploy speed-enforcement cameras in highway work zones. "

So how is this going to effect you? I know I'd rather keep people employed if all we are talking about is ultimate fighting and allowing grocery stores to sell wine. What does it matter if they are union workers or not? Sounds like you have a crummy job and you're jealous of people making a living wage.

Haha, Paterson is an epic fvcking mess. This is why I said in the other thread when somebody is in an elected office but wasn't elected into it there needs to be a new election very soon. Paterson has already in a fairly short time done a miraculous job at sucking more caulk than Spitzer's whores ever could have done. He will be annihilated come election time but not before he's continued to give it to us some more first.

A billion won't be enough, the deficit is going to continue to be big, he'll have to jack them more or cut spending more. Guess which one he'll lean toward.

-Mr. Paterson is reviving a proposal to tax sodas — $1.28 per gallon for bottled soft drinks

-ratchet up a number of taxes on hospitals, nursing homes and other health care providers.

-One of the most controversial measures will be the decision to cut school aid by 5 percent, to $20.5 billion. Under the governor’s plan, wealthier districts would bear the larger portion of the cuts — a strategy that has long been fought by the state Senate, especially senators from Long Island.(Wealthy means NYC)

Republicans are only going to lay off people but they will still keep handing out millions of money to their Republican buddies to rip off the state. Its unfortunate the suckers on this board believe its a positive to cut an employee making $50k and keep a vender who does the same work and charges $120k.

Don't make me laugh, they've been trying to tax the Indian situation they created for years and years. When the Indian's threaten violence they pull back though. That's even funnier, the US can't take Indian troops... Worse is all the Indian casinos they are afraid to tax... Nice job NYS.

As for the sale of wine, how will that employ more people? Grocery stores don't need to put on more workers to sell the stuff, rather all those mom and pop liquor stores will be going out of business if that happens.

This state needs to cut back on government, taxes, employment & insurance laws before the only people left here are government employees.

For the state, it's cheaper to have a vendor at 120K a year than an employee at 50k. That 50k employee is going to work for twenty years then continue to get pay and benefits for the rest of his life.

Very good point, I hadn't thought of that.

Patterson's reaction at the rich leaving New York has been "Good riddance", so it ought to be pretty amusing to see him trying to get a billion from poor people. Mandatory lottery tickets? 10% tax on check cashing? hamburger Helper surcharge?

Tennessee had a governor who tried to get a state income tax through (against our constitution) simply by calling it a "right to work" tax; perhaps Patterson can levy a "right to not work" tax to go with the state income tax.

Yes Patterson is an idiot. At this point, he'll do anything to try to cling on to his seat. Its a shame the choice is between Cuomo or Patterson. I wish New Yorkers could choose a better Governor.

It's actually not funny if you live here.

However, I readily laugh at the mess Californians have gotten themselves into so I won't be a hypocrit, although in my defense I can't even vote here anyway.

Hate to tell you, but we pay more in taxes at this moment in NY than people in CA do, and that's before the $1Billion in extra taxes and fees.

Damn, it sucks in western NY. NYC keeps sucking our money in, as well as Paterson's pet projects.

We can't win.

But where other than NY can a middle class family pay $6-7k/year in property taxes? In most parts of the country you'd have to live in a really nice house for that. But here it's a tax burden accessible to far more people! What fun!

More myths. I work for Michigan and I don't get a pension. So who is going to pay me the rest of my life when I retire?? Being from the inside, I know what kind of ripoffs are going on with government contractors and vendors. The stuff they get away with because of their political buddies is amazing while the fall guy is the little state employee. Most of you guys have little knowledge of what goes on in an office and just base it off of Rush Limbaugh, stereotypes, and general hatred of anything union related.

Here in Academia, we are scared. The only mitigating factor is the fact that my tuition / salary / insurance money comes from a grant not tied to the Tennessee's budget.

That mentality is the problem right there. No one should expect to live the high life upon turning 55 or 65 regardless of their past. If you want to stop working, save up your money, invest it, and then use it when you retire. Pay off your house so you don't need as much income. Find work you really enjoy and call it retirement.

Whatever you do, do NOT expect someone to pay you to retire simply because.

I know we pay out a hell of a lot more than we keep, and I know it heads east.

I'd be glad to divide the state so NYC could be the 51st state, if they take Albany with them.

We'd be back in the black in short order.

You can keep Albany, its a worthless money drain. If NYC is the 51st state, the state budget would look horrible while NYC will be fiscally sound.

Nope, with your independence comes Albany. :p

What a friggin mess that place is. They don't even legislate until almost the end of the session, then ram everything through so no one has time to find out what shit they are shoveling on us.
