Patron = overrated crap?

I've never been a big fan although there seems to be this phase after the freshman partying in college where you drown yourself in dirt cheap alcohol (i.e. Popov Vodka, Keystone Lite, Cuervo), and someone takes you over and goes "Man, Patron is the sh!t. This is high end tequila. You know that Cuervo crap you've been drinking? Yeah that's why you throw that crap up instantly" Then they get you a shot of Patron Silver (the cheapest stuff anyway), and somehow people now think they're the cool stuff.

It seems everytime I'm with a group of people and they want tequila, some guy goes to assure everyone that he'll buy the high end tequila (and that almost ALWAYS means Patron)...

The same happens with vodka when people run into Grey Goose. Don't get me wrong. Both of these spirits are better than certain cheap crap. I've been exposed more to Don Julio as I have some Mexican coworkers who love that stuff. Patron to them is just overrated stuff. Personally, I agree. There's other great brands OTHER than Patron too, but I guess not many people realize.

I was in Vegas and at one of the pool parties this weekend, and as I was getting some shots of Patron (honestly, this is the first time I've ever bought a round of Patron cuz usually I drink other stuff), and I noticed it was the only tequila they stuffed in the fridge with the other beers. I'm sure they have other brands, but I'm guessing they kept the Patron in the popular fridge that was getting lots of action. It seemed to be the only tequila I saw being ordered at least...

I never really liked Patron. For my budget its always been Repasado 1800. I'm sure there's better, but $30 per bottle is about as much as I'm going to spend on Tequila. More of a rum person myself.

1800 is nice for the money. patron silver is good though too. what would you recommend over patron though? (i'm not a big tequila drinker)

Never had it. I haven't thoroughly explored tequila, but 1800 anejo, and Tres Generaciones anejo are both favorites of mine.

Isn't it made in Vegas?

A couple of years ago we went to a resort a little south of Cancun, and there were always people asking for Patron, and the bartenders would give them the WTF shoulder shrug. Then the people would try to explain the awesome tequila that isn't available in the home of tequila. the bartender would shrug again and offer up some Don Julio, and the people would walk off.

I really don't like patron at all. I think I'd rather drink cuervo

I gotta try some other brands to wean my friends off patron

Patron is good stuff but it is overpriced; but make no mistake there is nothing wrong with Patron. Patron is not made in Vegas; it's made in Jalisco MX - the USA importer is incorporated in NV. Most 100% agave tequilas are fine. Sauza Hornitos is almost as good at half the price. Cazadores is also very good; I personally don't like Jimador but some do. Also spending the extra $$ for tequila makes more of a difference with reposado or anejo tequilas. Blanco/Plata not so much.

"Normal" Cuervo is not real tequila (i.e not 100% blue agave).

Cancun is NOT the home of tequila. That would be Jalisco.

Oh yeah Patron is fine. I don't think it sucks or anything. I just think it's too popular for its own good. I mean stupid songs like LMFAO's Shots or whatever seem to name drop Patron all the time like it's the only tequila out there. I guess it does depend on what kinda crowd you hang out with.

I feel like I do hang out with some people who think they are all elitist and get "expensive alcohol" like Patron to show off or something. But if you're gonna spend on Patron, you might as well try Don Julio, Cazadores, Cabo Wabo, etc. I'm just annoyed Patron is overrated in that sense....

Oh yeah, Cazadores is great and so is Corzo.

A great tequila has to do two things well, it has to be smooth and there can be no whiskey taste. Patron, Don Julio, Casa Noble, and many others do it well. So far my nod is to Casa Noble. I wouldn't put Cazadores in that group and I've never tried Corzo...but I will.

Yes, it's overrated crap that's marketed to college kids who're use to shitty ass Cuervo. Have to agree with others in this thread, that for shots, almost nothing I've had is better than Don Julio.

To me both Patron and Don Julio are good for shots, as they both go down very smoothly. I only notice a slight difference in taste.

An argument could be made that it's overpriced but it is definitely not crap. Incredibly smooth and no matter how much I've had, it's never left me with a hangover.

As you said, Patron is usually chilled... which goes down a lot better than room temperature Cuervo.

I think all tequila is sweat from Satan, so I can't comment on which is good and which isn't.

As for Vodka, there is a huge difference between the cheap stuff and Grey Goose, Kettle One, Belvedere, etc.
