Patriot Act shot down

Too early to proclaim victory-------they will be back trying to sneak it through.
Front door, back door, or any door with new lipstick for an old pig. One new terrorist attack
and it will sail through.

So this vampire needs to be killed now--wooden stake through the heart and requiring at
least 60 votes to over ride the prohibition that needs passed now. If we had a decent
court system the law would be struck down already as unconstitutional anyway.

republicans must be really worried so that they wont even accept an extension. not going to be around in a couple years to try again to make it permanent, eh?

The CNN article is a bit more informing...

It seems to me that unless some parts of the patriot act aren't renewed by december 31st, some provisions will expire...

I wonder what those are exactly...

Yes, it was the vote for cloture which would end debate and bring it to an up-or-down vote.

Indeed.

Now, wouldn't it be amusing if, as a result of this failing, if bureaucracy caused the provisions to expire at the end of the year?

I'll drink to that

The Patriot Act does not even make the tradeoff of liberty vs security. It takes away freedom without providing any additional security. It doesn't solve any of the problems that led to 9/11, and it creates all new problems.

Well Franklin is right, that's not a good tradeoff to make. But the Patriot Act doesn't even meet that low bar, it's actually worse. Instead of giving up liberty for security, we give up liberty for nothing.

Right as rain you are sir, we are trading freedom for nothing.
Ironically I feel safer now without that type of intrusive power being permanent.
Not like GWB follows the law mind you so it is somewhat moot.

You know, I think I actually feel that way as well. People get so concerned about the threat of terrorism that they forget there are other threats to our way of life. I'm not saying I think the government is evil or anything, but even if they have good ethics, I'd still prefer there to be restrictions. I don't like having to rely on the good will of the people with that kind of power, that's NOT how a democracy is supposed to work.

I feel safer too, for the moment, but I suspect they will get it done their way somehow. These people aren't the type to take "no" for answer.....
It gives me hope though, that our long national nightmare may eventually end.
