Yeah it's not a "bad" drive (especially at that price), just be aware of its limitations. On a vanilla install it works alright (there's some stuttering/freezing, mostly while installing programs, but it's not horrible), and with some tweaking it would work great.
 
Yeah, i'm thinking some noatime mount and using it on a mythboxen with boxee should work great. Just need to bump my ram some to use ram drives.

That's exactly what I was thinking, for something like this it would be excellent. I mean you can't get a 32GB CF card + SATA adapter for this price, and CF cards are much slower.

is the stuttering due to write speed limits or it not fast enough when switching to and from write to read functions?
 
I am dying to get my OS onto one of these puppies and make my machine utterly silent, but my instincts tell me to wait it out a bit longer..

Yeah if you can I'd wait for the next-gen JMicron controllers, which will hopefully address the random write issues w/MLC. If they don't, at least by then the Intel drives might be a bit cheaper. 🙂

Thanks for the info.. I have not really started to delve into researching the technology as of yet, so your input is appreciated... just seems early.

You basically do not want your swap file, spool file or hibernate file on an SSD drive. You can move the first two, and turn off the 3rd. Indexing is also a problem with these drives, so turn it off. Moving your internet cache to a "regular" hard drive is also a plus.

Those things, and a few other possible tweaks, will make a huge difference. It's the ton of little writes that kills the performance of the (current) SSD drives.

I was going to remove the first, what is the second? And no hibernating allowed at all? So just sleep and restart then...?

For the internet cache how could we do that? I don't want to install firefox to another drive, that defeats the entire purpose, because that's probably the first program I open up each time I get on my computer.

Well I've never used the OCZ drives so I can't compare them, but I did try out a Patriot (loaded XP on it), and the drive does exhibit stuttering. It wasn't to the point of making it unbearable to use, but it was an annoyance, and for some tasks it got pretty bad. Streaming high bitrate video, for example, seemed to make it stutter really bad. Guess it couldn't handle all the caching.

As others have pointed out, with some tweaking it would work out really well. But it's something I didn't really want to mess around with, and I could understand others not wanting to either. If you want something that just performs well right out of the box, wait for the next gen MLC drives. Hopefully they will have addressed the random write issue.
