Pathetic New Low: Sen. Mitch McConnell Filibusters His Own Bill

McConnell really screwed this up. He was digging for a talking point to say 'I introduced a bill to raise the debt ceiling, and Reid wouldn't bring it to the floor for a vote!'

Reid couldn't be put in that situation, so even if he didn't have the votes he had to bring it to the floor. I'm sure he did have the votes, though.

I don't know how you characterize this as anything other than a screw-up.

BTW, can you imagine the outrage if Obama asked Congress for a bill, congress delivered exactly what he asked for, and then Obama refused to sign it?

Everyone is laughing about this, but really, it's not funny, it's disgraceful. MM should be run right out of the senate.

That sounds like the GOP in general.

I thought this was kind of funny.

Just let the house vote against it. Or maybe the House could just table the bill.

I hope they dont kick the can down the road, but I could live with that. I would like to see how people react to all their Obammacare taxes. The big problem is if we keep adding trillions to the deficeit.

McConnell is so screwed.
If the Dems take away the filibuster he will look weak.
If the Dems don't take away the filibuster he will have to let some compromise on the fiscal cliff pass or he will take the heat for the economic disaster.

He will definitely be in a fight for the Republican nomination against some tea party crazy next year.

I have to lay in a supply of popcorn. It will be a great show.

I really hope that my state is smart enough to kick that old SOB out of the Senate during the next round of votes but I doubt it. Maybe Ashley Judd has enough star power and will run and put him to pasture.

Yes I do but it shouldn't be increased, We have a serious spending problem and everyone is trying to ignore that and focus on other issues to distract, the spending needs to be cut with real cuts

NO ONE IS IGNORING THAT, YOU FUCKING IGNORANT, UNREAD, TROLL ASS.

Complete fabrication. The bill McConnel proposed would grant the President the authority to raise the debt ceiling under his own authority. He was trying to embarrass the Democrats bu illustrating that they were against such a broad authority. They took him up on his bluff, since all this would do is take the debt ceiling away as a means of grandstanding over money already spent.

Nice try to cover for the douchebag though.

Nope.

It wouldn't have done a d@mn thing because it would never pass the House.

But McConnell sure as heck chickened out. If he felt sure it wouldn't pass in the Senate he should allowed a vote. Couldn't hurt, like I said above it ain't passing the House.

Probably not, but it would have put some pressure on the house.

You think he will be challenged on the right?

The worst he's done (and is going to do) is let uncoupling of the tax cuts pass the Senate, without a filibuster. I don't see a lot to run on for a challenger.

I'm astonished that, given the election results, there was not even a hint of replacing McConnell. He has been pretty incompetent leading his party in the Senate.

I don't think that's true at all, given Repubs' true objectives, which were to Beat Obama! by denying him any victories & by holding back economic recovery. They nearly succeeded in that, and they have so far succeeded entirely in holding down taxes for the true Bush constituency, thwarting financial reform & providing record corporate profits in the face of massive unemployment.

They're now trapped by their own successes in that regard, kinda like the Nazis at Stalingrad...

McConnell's recent antics just show that Repubs aren't serious about deficit reduction, never were, and that their rhetoric is empty pandering to their empty headed base...

I stated, IF the article is written correctly.

The article was not.

Seeing how the article wording was wrong, then from my POV, McConnell bluffed and was called.

Thank you zsdersw, for showing the flaw in the way the article was written

No, the article never said what you were trying to imply. Weak.

Well considering that NO ONE wants REAL spending cuts but rather increase spending then yes they are ignoring it. There have not been any mentions of REAL spending cuts and do you really believe that pos obama will cut spending? If he had his way he would increase it

The GOP didn't "nearly succeed." They spent well over a billion dollars, lost every swing state but one-and lost most of them by pretty significant margins. They lost seats in the House and lost seats in the Senate where 2/3 of the open seats were held by Democrats. Given the weak economy there really is no way to characterize the GOP election performance, as engineered by McConnell, as abysmal. I stand by my original point-I really don't see why or how the GOP hasn't removed him from his leadership role. He's neither performing the job for his party nor his country.
