IIRC there was a date they started limiting trademarks, so lots of things were grandfathered in. I want to say it was in the mid 80s, these trademarks are older than that.There were many blogs listing such trademarks or trademark applications right after the denial was announced.

I'm really torn on this subject, but I think it comes down to this: do we want patent clerks deciding morality. I tent to want to favor free speech here.

I'm sure someone has already corrected you...but I for the record, they are named after Paul Brown.
It was, that's why they have had it until now.The Washington Redskins trademarked their name well before the 1980's.
If "Aunt Jemima" is grandfathered in, given it's seriously racist past, then "Washington Redskins" certainly should be.
