Patch Panel with CAT5 and PHone system

hey, one of my employers just ordered DSL and is ready to network his office. he's got 4 phone lines setup, and he told me he had the office wired with CAT5 when it was being built. im looking at it and yes, it is wired with CAT5, but the phone systems and the network jack are going through the same wire. now he's only using the phone right now, and the patch panel they have on there is not the one im gonna need to run patch cables to the router. is this a normal practice? we're they just figuring that eventually they'd stop using the phone lines and just only use the network? or can i have a phone line running 2 wires off of the CAT5 with no problem. im thinking there will be interference.

my house is wired the same way, but i went wireless, so i dont even use it. is the idea of it is that your only using the phone line for your internet, so when you finally make a LAN you wont need your phone line anymore?

im gonna post a picture of the patch panel so you guys can give me your opinion.
