Password.........What Password?

My Desktop PC is running W2K.

I have a laptop. dual booting W2K and Win98.

The desktop can access the laptop with either OS running.

The laptop can access the Desktop when running W2k.

The problem is when running Win98. When I try to access the Desktop, it asks me for a password.

I don't use a password to log on, to either computer. I dont have any passwords assigned to any of the shared drives, on the Desktop PC.

What password am I supposed to use?
Where would I find this info on the W2K Desktop, so I can change it, or remove it?

Thanks in advance...........

On the desktop running w2k, create new drive shares, giving them any names you want, and checking the box that gives access to "everyone".

Your problem is that on the win2k comp you need to set up the laptop username and password that is used when booting with win98. I had the same problem before. The laptop user name and passwaord was not found in the userlist on the win2k comp. Do that and the next time it will not ask you for a password.

Win98 will ask for a password even where there isn't one. If you change to "Windows logon" in the network setup it will quit asking for the password. This is normal and probably not the reason why you are not seeing the other computer. Something else is probably going on.

Bglad has the right idea. On your 98 machine....Click on Start, go to Find, then do a search for "*.pwl". What that will do is give you all the password files. Once you see the list of files in the dialog box, highlight them and delete them. Then go into your network setup and change the default logon to windows logon and reboot. When you boot up Windows will prompt you for a username and password. Put a username, but leave the password blank. It should go through and the next time you reboot you won't see the prompt. Windows95 works the same way, but it will prompt you a second time to confirm that you want to leave the password blank....but same thing pretty much... Hope that helps.

ummm most of the guys are wrong, jakkio has the right idea. you have to create the account that you use to log into 98 on your 2k box. or you can just enable the guest account. or you can log into your 98 box with the same username/pw that you use to log onto the 2k box

OK.......this is how I fixed it.

I changed the logon to Microsoft networks.

When I rebooted it prompted me for a user name/password.

I used the same user name, as the W2K Desktop.

Since I don't use a password on an of my PC's I left this blank.

I can now access my shared drives, on my W2K Desktop, from my Win98 Laptop.

Thanks to everyone that responded......you were all a little right 🙂
