Is there any way to recover the password or unlock the Word file? I have a Mac, but also access to a PC, so a solution for either OS works.

Elcomsoft has tools - some have some limited trial options so they may work for you.

If you're lookin' for free I'd start hitting Google....some older versions of Word can be cracked with just a text editor and a bit of math.
