Password protect CDR?

What's the easiest method to password protect a CDR/CDRW I burn?
Can I use WinXP's built in encryption for CDRs? Also I believe it's encryption still allows unauthorized users to see the filenames, just not read them, correct? If so, I'm looking for a 3rd party app that would not allow the CDR to be read at all, on any machine w/ any OS, without a password.

 
I have no real answer for you.... other than

You can zip those files up and give the zip file a password. Thats just one work around i just thought of.

PGPDisk does this and perhaps DriveCrypt. The former is a component of PGP Desktop Security which has been discontinued and I think has been free for personal use anyway. With recent versions each component was made available seperately but with the DS package any part can be installed. You create an encrypted container file which when accessed will prompt for a password and at your option mount as a seperate volume or folder (NTFS only). It works the same from CD, except I think the NTFS cannot be used with ROM so FAT32 formatting is required for the container, which then limits mounting to a volume. See zeds or hacktic.
 
Actually I want to PW protect my text documents on CD. And I dont want to have to unzip them every time I want to access them.

BTW, I though the correct name is PrOn?


Auric, just so I'm clear, are you saying I cannot use PGP to create a PW protected CD if my OS is installed on NTFS?

Yes, it is quite handy for more than just pr0n! Secure your email, account information, important documents and much much more with true encryption unlike zip passwords.

PGP DS also includes the ability to create Self Decrypting Archives but those are not ideal for frequent access and are more suited to archiving or exchanging.

Slickone, you can it is just that you must format the container file with FAT32 if you are going to run it from a CD because NTFS needs write access not possible on CD-ROM (Read Only Memory) even if the contents are not able to be altered. Strange but true. I have not tried UDF (packet writing) with an NTFS formatted container on CD but guess that should work. It does work with FAT32 but FAT32 does not have that limitation. Using UDF increases the probability of data loss though and using it in combination with encryption even more so.

So just format the container with FAT32 unless you are going to copy it from CD to HDD before running it, or otherwise just want to backup a container you will run from HDD exclusively.
